. Blue Guide Istanbul

This guidebook is great at what it does, but is otherwise limited. It's a really excellent reference to the history, churches, and monuments of Istanbul, often going into exhaustive detail such as what day (On April 23, 1542 at 12 noon, etc.) something happened. (It must be said, however, that Freely gets a bit enthusiastic about some very minor monuments and mosques which do not seem to really deserve it.) It has great information on all the major and minor mosques and other monuments around Istanbul, including maps and diagrams. In this sense, I found it very useful on my trip. As a general guidebook, however, it falls short. This is not the author's interest, and lists of hotels, restaurants and bars ... Read More:

. Blue Guide London

The Blue Guide is without doubt THE best guide to have with you in London (or Rome, or Florence, or Paris...)as you are touring the sites. For most attractions you don't need to buy the pricey guidebooks at the site to figure out what you are seeing - the Blue Guide will take you room-by-room through musuems, explain the who, what, where and when of the art and architecture around you and give you a decent history lesson. Take this guide, a general guide like Time Out or Frommer's and a good map (A-Z London)and you are set to enjoy London without breaking your back or the bank. This is NOT the guide to plan your trip with; although they recommend excellent lodgings and restaurants the descriptions are one-liners - most people like more information ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Umbria
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide

The Blue Guide is the most exhaustive guide on art in Umbria I came across. Usually this fairly small - and touristically not yet overexploited - region is treated together with Tuscany and/or Le Marches. So if you really want to focus your trip only on Umbria and art is your main concern, this is the guide to take along. It must be said that visually the guide has not much to offer : the lay-out is conservative and illustrations are kept to a minimum (no pictures, shaky pen drawings only). The city maps are very helpful. The depth of information offered is however staggering - and to a certain extent misleading : even the most insignificant borough gets jubilant descriptions of frescoes, oil paintings, sculptures and other ... . Blue Guide Sicily
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Alta Macadam

Yes, as other reviewers write, Ellen Grady's book is full of rich and detailed history of the places you'll visit, but it lacks essential practical information. We used it only for Taormina (beautiful town, highly recommended) and Catania (Sicily's second largest city, which you could skip), so the book may be more helpful elsewhere on the island. As for these two destinations, the book lacked essential information (like the frequency and cost of various public transportation options between towns). Also, it had virtually no narrative description of restaurants, just a mere listing. If I wanted history, I would have bought a history book. I wanted practical information to get the best out of our short time on the island, this book didn't have it.

. Blue Guide: Cyprus
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide

I bought this book and the Rough Guide to Cyprus for my year long stay in Cyprus. Get the Rough Guide. This book is far less informative and is quite out of date. For instance, despite the fact that the edition I bought was "updated" in something like 1997, it still lists the US Embassy at an address that has been defunct for about 10 years. Pretty basic item for a travel book to have straight. The book is readable but unless you're looking for a very quick intro to Cyprus, get the Rough Guide instead.

. Blue Guide Florence

If you are looking for a guide that will help you "narrow down" the choices of sights to see in Florence, this one is not for you. If you are looking for extensive lists and reviews of hotels, again this is not for you. Finally, if you're looking for detailed restauraunt information, you won't find it here. Basically, this guide is not a planning guide. I have used the Internet for most of my planning (e-mail me if you need some help finding some great sites MarySorens@yahoo.com). What this guide does have to offer is an amazing amount of cultural, historic, and artistic information in a very packable sized guide. This will be the guide to read when you are doing your own tours of Florence. It will tell you far more than any tour guide would. This ... Read More:
