.Blue Guide Albania And Kosovo City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: James Pettifer May 31, 2001 This reminds me of one of those coffee table books people used to buy because they felt they ought. a) because it is the only guide on the market b) because every other traveller seems to have one c) it looks nice Whether it suits its purpose is quite another matter. Put simply if you're into history in a big way and really want to take on the Albanian cause then this will be indispensible. If you want an up to date guide to the actual practical information the book is almost useless. First, it is clear the author had a lot of help on the way from prearranged contacts eager to be in the book and second the author obviously had a car and I would hazard a guess a driver (at the cost of the Blue Guide). ... .Blue Guide Istanbul City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: John Freely April 30, 1991 This guidebook is great at what it does, but is otherwise limited. It's a really excellent reference to the history, churches, and monuments of Istanbul, often going into exhaustive detail such as what day (On April 23, 1542 at 12 noon, etc.) something happened. (It must be said, however, that Freely gets a bit enthusiastic about some very minor monuments and mosques which do not seem to really deserve it.) It has great information on all the major and minor mosques and other monuments around Istanbul, including maps and diagrams. In this sense, I found it very useful on my trip. For most attractions you don't need to buy the pricey guidebooks at the site to figure out what you are seeing - the Blue Guide will take you room-by-room through musuems, explain the who,what, where and when of the art and architecture around you and give you a decent history lesson. Take this guide, a general guide like Time Out or Frommer's and a good map (A-Z London)and you are set to enjoy London without breaking your back or the bank. This is NOT the guide to plan your trip with; although they recommend excellent lodgings and restaurants the descriptions are one-liners - most people like more information ... .Blue Guide Morocco City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Jane Holliday July 28, 1998 You won't find the latest Casa Blanca club or Ouerzazate-Marrakech bus schedules in it, but you can't beat the Blue Guide for concise historical background and comment on art and architechture. In places where this really matters, like Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and Fes, it surpasses more mainstream guide books. .Blue Guide Umbria City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Alta Macadam May 02, 1996 The Blue Guide is the most exhaustive guide on art in Umbria I came across. Usually this fairly small - and touristically not yet overexploited - region is treated together with Tuscany and/or Le Marches. So if you really want to focus your trip only on Umbria and art is your main concern, this is the guide to take along. It must be said that visually the guide has not much to offer : the lay-out is conservative and illustrations are kept to a minimum (no pictures, shaky pen drawings only).The city maps are very helpful. .Blue Guide Venice City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Alta Macadam August 27, 1998 The amazingly rich Blue Guides have been around for years and years - I recently bought a hardback Rome Blue Guide from 1964! - and they just keep getting better and better. If you're like me, and have a passion for art and history, they're the best guides available. No glossy photos, and dense with details, they're not the book for everyone - but because they concisely describe nearly every corner of the city, they ARE the guidebook for some of us. I use other guidebooks for planning (Access is excellent, and Littlewood's "A Literary Companion to Venice" is great for walking tours) but the Blue Guide is only one I carry in my purse every day in Venice. >>See More Reviews & Details on Blue Guide Venice |
