Usually this fairly small - and touristically not yet overexploited - region is treated together with Tuscany and/or Le Marches. So if you really want to focus your trip only on Umbria and art is your main concern, this is the guide to take along. It must be said that visually the guide has not much to offer : the lay-out is conservative and illustrations are kept to a minimum (no pictures, shaky pen drawings only).The city maps are very helpful. .Blue Guide Istanbul City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: John Freely July 27, 2000 I lived and worked in Ankara for three years, and used this guide and its predecessor every time I visited Istanbul. If you want to get off the beaten track, or if you really want to understand what you're looking at, this is the guide for you. If you want something glossy and light, as some of the other reviewers seemed to have wanted, this isn't for you. It's an in-depth guide, meant for people who are interested in culture, history, and architecture. It's not a picture book, nor is it designed to let you plan where you'll stay or where you'll eat, though it does provide limited, good recommendations. They consistently provide the most in-depth information particularly regarding any aspect of the arts.They are also amazingly thorough. On a recent trip to Bologna, Italy, others in the choir I was touring with were at a loss as to what to do because their pretty guides with all the pictures and 3d floor plans (guess which), only had 3 pages for the city. My blue guide had 11 pages...in small print telling me of fascinating doorways to poke my head through to see a magnificent courtyard, etc. I have borrowed the Blue Guide to Yugoslavia from my local library because, as it is out of print, I am having difficulty finding one to buy. .Blue Guide Sicily City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Ellen Grady April 29, 2003 Yes, as other reviewers write, Ellen Grady's book is full of rich and detailed history of the places you'll visit, but it lacks essential practical information. We used it only for Taormina (beautiful town, highly recommended) and Catania (Sicily's second largest city, which you could skip), so the book may be more helpful elsewhere on the island. As for these two destinations, the book lacked essential information (like the frequency and cost of various public transportation options between towns). Also, it had virtually no narrative description of restaurants, just a mere listing. If I wanted history, I would have bought a history book. If you are looking for extensive lists and reviews of hotels, again this is not for you. Finally, if you're looking for detailed restauraunt information, you won't find it here. Basically, this guide is not a planning guide. I have used the Internet for most of my planning (e-mail me if you need some help finding some great sites MarySorens@yahoo.com). What this guide does have to offer is an amazing amount of cultural, historic, and artistic information in a very packable sized guide. Alas, this volume isn't up to the standards of many of the others in the series. It needs revising and retooling. The problems with this guide aren't necessarily the fault of the current author. Brian Lalor, an artist and archaeologist with some significant accomplishments to his credit, appears to be potentially well-qualified to take over the stewardship of this volume, which is now in its 8th edition. But a lot of the current text dates back to earlier editions and other authors, and thus it is hard to know who was originally responsible for some of the mistakes I noticed. .Blue Guide Northern Italy City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide by: Paul Blanchard February 01, 2001 If you want to know about the art, architecture, history, culture, and landscapes of Northern Italy, then this is the book you need. Using solely this guide, we spent 2 weeks in and around this region of Italy. We never wondered what we were looking at, because we merely turned to the location in the guide, and read all about the place. To me, as a well-traveled person, if I want to know something about a place, a Blue Guides will give me all you ever wanted to know. A Blue Guide is my "tour guide" wherever I go.
