. Sickened: The True Story of a Lost Childhood
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Julie Gregory
September 28, 2004
I didn't find this book to be that captivating. It was an ok story from a survivor of child abuse. However, it lacked a true insight and narrative quality that should go along with memoirs. I found the extra medical inserts to add credibility but that was it. It seemed like Julie really was yearning to prove something in this book, but it fell short of an insightful and good tale. I think what brought me to the end was to see how Julie coped once she figured out there was a psychiatric disease she could label her mother with, but otherwise I found myself rather disconnected with the protagonist of the story.

. Bones to Ashes: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Kathy Reichs
June 24, 2008
Oh, do I ever adore Reichs's novels. Her novels show proof that there are no limits to one's imagination - especially when the author knows what she/he is talking about.
Reichs sucks you in with the first sentence and doesn't let go until the very last word. The mystery and forensic descriptions keep you just as glued to the pages as the characters do. Again, Tempe lands herself in trouble when she does something someone asked her not to do. But she can't let go of the possibility that the remains could be those of a friend that disappeared.
Twists and turns and a surprising ending make the entire book worth every single one of its 406 pages. A new twist with her ex-husband Pete could have come at a better time, and a twist with Ryan ... Read More:

. This Charming Man
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Marian Keyes
June 10, 2008
As usual, Marian Keyes newest novel, This Charming Man, kept my interest and I recommend it. Although the book claims to be about 4 women affected by one man, Paddy de Courcy, Alicia remains a mystery to the end. I never considered Paddy as charming, either.
A number of reviewers have commented negatively on Lola's voice, as the writing is in diary short-hand. However, in the first chapter, her voice rings true and she is very, very funny. Later on in the book, her short-hand style began to get on my nerves, as all the characters sound like her.
Keyes deals with some tough subjects in this book--domestic abuse and alcoholism. She does an exceptional job with these subjects.
I really did like this novel, but it was unevenly edited. ... Read More:

. Artemis Fowl The Time Paradox
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Eoin Colfer
July 15, 2008
Those who have been faithfully following this series will know that this is book six of the adventures of the teenaged criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl II.
Picking up at Fowl Manor, we learn that three years have passed while Artemis was otherwise occupied, and that he now has two brothers, twins named Beckett and Myles. This book goes in a different direction to the previous plot, making no mention of some of the characters introduced in The Lost Colony. There are references to certain events, but other than the main characters, most of the story is new material.
As the title implies, an older and more mature Artemis Fowl enlists the help of his friend Captain Holly Short, dwarf Mulch Diggums and the imp warlock No.1 to journey to the past to ... Read More:

. Nothing to Lose
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Lee Child
June 03, 2008
I love the Jack Reacher series and have even pre-ordered them knowing they would be good. I didn't enjoy the previous book and didn't enjoy this one. Something is missing from the Jack Reacher of old. I think what appealed to me about the earlier books was that we saw different sides of Jack Reacher and also learned more and more about his earlier life as the series went on. We learned nothing new in this book. I would say it is a stand alone. The fact the Jack Reacher entered the political arena for the first time was surprising. I hope Lee can figure it out by the next book or I won't be willing to blindly order his books in hardcover.

. The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Scott Kelby
January 06, 2008
I'd never really mastered using window light for portraits until I read this book. Following the tips on pages 85, 88, 89, 91, 93, 94, 96, and 97 gave me solid results the first time I tried it. Now I can be confident of taking acceptable portraits and I will find it easier to ask people to pose without worrying about looking stupid. Those tips alone were worth the price of the book and the other tips are a bonus.
Some people might find the tips "obvious" but there were enough new ones to make it worthwhile for me.

. New Moon
City Travel Guides > Books > Books
by: Stephenie Meyer
September 06, 2006
The first time I read Twilight, I did NOT like it unlike 98% of those who read it but I decided to give it a chance and re-read it and found the book was better the second time but still overly hyped and mediocre. I was so intrigued and curious about what would happen to Bella and Edward that I decided to read "New Moon"; it did not disappoint.
New Moon is a more well written book (that doesn't sound like fanfiction-like Twilight) and is far more mature. It's a great read. The book is full of action and emotion that is written in a way that you can't put down the book. It drew me in intensly and I found myself feeling, fearing for the characters. The characters were better developed and more interesting in this book. The introduction of werewolves and new charactetrs ... Read More:
