. Ruins Of Pompeii
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Penton Overseas
June 01, 1989
This is the best audiotape--no holds barred--I've ever listened to. Ronald Hutton takes the listener on a tour of the homes and towns of some of Britain's greatest writers. First of all, Ronald Hutton has a wonderful voice. It is the quinessential English voice. The voice all we Americans think IS England. It isn't. But it sounds wonderful anyway. Secondly, although Ronald Hutton doesn't have a great deal of time to spend on each writer and although what he is saying is not all that new, each minibiography is presented in a fresh and interesting way. The result, in my case at least, was to motivate me to find out more. There is a simple theme driving the narration: writers write under pressure, to relieve it or in spite ... Read More:

. Old Patagonian Express
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Paul Theroux
March 01, 1995
Paul's books provide a very detailed travel account. But, it appears to be a reporter's view. His writings lack the passion of an explorer. Travelling to distant places is essentially a journey within. Great travelers wouldn't ridicule the places they visit or the people they meet. In this book he seems describing the slums and the poverty of Mexico and other countries. Trust me, not many people want to be poor by choice. Traveling is a sublime, spiritual & learning experience. It is an opportunity to look beyond our perceptions & bias. His writings are just an account of what he saw, they lack the light of a traveler...

. Holidays in Hell
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: P.J. O'Rourke
October 04, 1994
This is a dazzlingly brilliant collection of articles written about some of the world's worst trouble spots. Nobody else writes like O'Rourke, managing to vividly conjure up the awfulness of the places he visits, yet at the same time managing to make you laugh as well. The tone of the articles ranges from the horrific 'Christmas in El Salvador', to the purely comic 'Weekend Getaway: Heritage USA' which describes a bizarre visit to a Biblical theme park. He describes how his girlfriend attempts to go shopping in the park and returns with "a dazed, perplexed expression, like a starved Ethiopian given a piece of wax fruit". I know the feeling, Disneyland Paris had exactly the same effect on me. In 'Mexican Border Idyll' he asks the question ... Read More:

. Into the Heart of Borneo
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Redmond O'Hanlon
1997-11
There are three things you should know about Redmond O'Hanlon's Into the Heart of Borneo: it's very educational, it's very funny, and it's a heckuva good adventure. The premise is that two middle-aged British academics, poet James Fenton and naturalist Redmond O'Hanlon, are dispatched to Borneo in search of the rare mountain Rhinoceros. Whatever their ultimate goal, after two pages you're hooked by O'Hanlon's clever writing and self-deprecating wit as he describes the preparations for their epic journey. You can learn a lot from this book. For example, did you realize that Borneo is the world's third largest island? that over 1,700 different species of parasitic worm can infest your bloodstream? that a bite from a Wagler's Pit Viper will lead to nothing ... . River: One Man's Journey Down the Colorado, Source to Sea
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Colin Fletcher
2000-02
This is a good book for those who are genuinely interested in a journey in the wilderness. This is not a book for those who look for thrilling adventures, or those "armchair travelers" who look for commercialized travel books (such as those by Bill Bryson). You can say that the book lacks drama, it is too "plain". To a certain extent I agree with that. As Fletcher says in his book (about the Colorado), it plays "themes and variations". The same can be said about this book, most of the time it flows slowly, but along the way there are reflections, thoughts, observations, etc. It is not as "exciting" as the commercialized writings of Bill Bryson and the like, but you can sense the honesty in Fletcher's writing, that is, he ...
