. It's Better to Travel
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
from: Mercury
October 21, 1999
I listened to this CD constantly back when it first came out in the late '90s. I used to have a 3 hour round trip bus ride to and from the university, and Swing Out Sister were constant companions. Their slick synth pop jazz sound fused Sade's rhythmic jazz pop with the more upbeat sound of dance acts like Pet Shop Boys into a winning combination. Eventually I tired of the record - it's a little overproduced. Actually, it's a lot overproduced, but it sort of works with the material. It's also very much a product of its era. Of course, now that the airwaves are dominated by a completely different set of sonic clichés, that isn't necessarily such a bad thing. 15 years or so on, I can actually manage a bit of nostalgia for the ... . Happy Isles Of Oceania
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Paul Theroux, William Hootkins
September 04, 1996
I've enjoyed reading these reviews almost as much as i've enjoyed the three times i've read the book. It's the very personal travel journal of a cranky guy in a kayak and it's hugely entertaining BECAUSE it is so personal. All these comments about how 'it doesn't match reality,' or how it's racist, or how he's never happy just crack me up! It's not an travel guide or an encyclopedia entry or even National Geographic, it's a personal story... it doesn't need to be unbiased. Besides, If he was happy all the time it would be boring...

. Holidays in Hell
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: P J O'Rourke
September 02, 1996
This is a dazzlingly brilliant collection of articles written about some of the world's worst trouble spots. Nobody else writes like O'Rourke, managing to vividly conjure up the awfulness of the places he visits, yet at the same time managing to make you laugh as well. The tone of the articles ranges from the horrific 'Christmas in El Salvador', to the purely comic 'Weekend Getaway: Heritage USA' which describes a bizarre visit to a Biblical theme park. He describes how his girlfriend attempts to go shopping in the park and returns with "a dazed, perplexed expression, like a starved Ethiopian given a piece of wax fruit". I know the feeling, Disneyland Paris had exactly the same effect on me. In 'Mexican Border Idyll' he asks the question "What makes ... Read More:

. Romewalks
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Anya Shetterly
March 15, 1999
I just came back from Rome and the City came to life through Anya's guidance for us. Romewalks is the best travel book ever and is not really a travel book but a guide to the soul of Rome that Anya has captured and fortunately shared with everybody who reads her book. Wish I could personally thank her for taking me through Rome and seeing a City I would never have seen without her generosity. Thank you. Yane
