.Berlitz Italian Cassette Pack with Phrase Book City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette from: Berlitz August 16, 2001 I bought the audio cassette version of this guide that comes with a phrasebook. The nice feature is that the phrasebook has sections that are organized by color. So you can look to blue (example) to find vocabulary while you're at a restauarant, red when you're at a shop, etc. Hang onto the phrasebook while on your trip - the only thing that you will definitely need it for is the restaurants. Many of the best restaurants have authentic dishes that often have no English description. The problem is that the audio guide goes so fast that I found myself flipping pages to see where the speakers words were. You will not hear all of the vocabulary (even the most important basic words) spoken on the cassette or cd. So you may not understand ... Knowing that, one shouldn't expect to get too much out of it. Still, with the high praise generally given to Berlitz courses, I expected something a little more... everything. The book seems to have originally been a European Spanish course, which was superficially altered and relabeled so as to bring in more money for the authors. In a brief perusal of the phrase book, I noticed several faults. Several phrases seem to be word for word translations that won't necessarily be understood by native speakers. Other phrases, while common in Spain, are much less so in Latin America and so aren't very helpful and can actually be detrimental in your attempts to communicate. .The Best American Travel Writing City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette by: Mayes 2002-10 Although I didn't like most of the stories in this anthology, there were a few that I really, really, really loved. And they made it worth the price of the book, over and over. The introduction by Frances Mayes is a gem and really sets the tone. Especially if you were wondering why a report on 9-11 would qualify for "travel writing". (After you read that introduction, you'll -unbelievably - have to agree that it does). The story "40 years in Acapulco" is worth the price of the book by itself. I came away feeling almost guilty like a voyeur, as if I had just gotten a sneak peek into somebody elses life. .The Best American Travel Writing 2000 City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette by: Bryson March 19, 2004 My wife and I came across this CD in preparation for a very long drive to northern Michigan over the July 4th weekend and I am thoroughly pleased with this most-random selection. Aside from David Halberstam's self-absorbed "Nantucket" which barely passes as travel writing let alone good, let alone fresh (it may have helped if he read this piece) the selections were excellent and varied. Bryson's reading of "Winter Rules" nearly had us off the road southbound on US 127 near Midland, and Adamson's reading of the the thoroughly politically/socially incorrect (and excellent) "Weird Karma" nearly put us into a barrier near Ann Arbor on US 23.
