. Tuscany, Umbria & the Marches, 8th
City Travel Guides > Books > Cadogan

We have used this book to explore the area just south of us for 4 solid years. Every time I open it, I am surprised and delighted at its depth, the authors' erudition, and the daring way in which they are often judgemental about what they observe. Of course, it has all the practical stuff as well, but it is the culture and history that makes this so great. Their eloquence surpasses the medium by several orders of magnitude. Warmly recommended. These are the best travel writers in the business if you are looking for just that unusual perspective to add to your explorations. And you can read it again and again and see more.

This has got to be the best travel writing team alive. They are highly cultured without the slightest pretention, able to find that wonderful quirky detail or perspective, and include such basics as where the good cheap eats are. We have used this book on several trips to the South of Italia and are always delighted to read what they have to say on this or that art work or hidden piazza. The intelligence in these books is subtle and unusually wide-ranging - you can tell that this couple loves to learn as well as travel. They are truly superlative writers. Warmly recommended.

. Venice
City Travel Guides > Books > Cadogan
by: Dana Facaros
1994-02
I love Cadogan guides..they are simply the best on the market because in most instances the authors exhibit an intimate knowledge of the place being reviewed. There are some interesting tips (and snide asides) that have the reader almost laughing out loud! Such a nice change from the usual pablum.
My one complaint....why hasn't the Venice guide been updated? We used it on a trip in 1999 (fine then) but when we returned in 2004 we found that several restaurants had changed name and other information was also out of date. Now we're due to go back in 2007 and I assumed there would be a new edition by now..but there isn't.
Of course I realize that historical monuments haven't changed in centuries and the publishers probably don't ... Read More:

. Cadogan Guide to Rhodes and the Dodecanese
City Travel Guides > Books > Cadogan
by: Cadogan Books
February 26, 1999
This was one of the worst travel books I have ever picked up! As a travel journalist myself, I was shocked to find that in many instances the authors did not even bother to research exact addresses. They simply wrote, "ask the locals." Isn't that what Cadogan Guides paid these writers for? In addition, it's pretty scant--information you could easily find within a day of your stay on one of the islands. It was poorly researched! When I wrote to the publishers, livid that I had spent the money on a book that doesn't even list full addresses, they did not even bother to reply. That is how concerned they were with a reader's opinion.

. Greek Islands
City Travel Guides > Books > Cadogan
by: Dana Facaros
1995-07
The guide is mostly written for those with a bit more money to spend than the average backpacker; but, the information and irreverent Brit writing style are universally essential and delightful. I was more than satisfied with the excellent practical information and suggestions. The guide is also filled with the perfect amount of information and a seeming love for the Greek people and islands, I almost fell in love with the Greek islands just by reading the guide before my trip. There is a great chapter on Athens and an extremely helpful few pages on overviews of islands.
