Previous reviewer seems to have missed half their own point. If you are looking for Frommers or Fodors, BUY Frommers or Fodors! The world doesn't need any more of that ilk. That market is well established and those books are good at what they do.

We're the type of travellers who basically use the Net for more time sensitive things -- the changing food and lodging scenes in any given locale. Anymore, that type of info in a book holds a distinct disadvantage versus online sources. Given that we are already armed with that info beforehand, we don't need to pay for a guide book to resummarize it.

The book is informative and an excellent resource though some information is not correct and misleading. Many cautions and horror stories are stated but these facts apply to buying a home anywhere in the world. Dodgy real-estate agents, tradesmen and sellers can also be found world-wide though the impression given is that they are concentrated in Italy. With regards to permits and planning permission it can take up to six months if the building is classified as a Historical building but if it is not a historical building a reply is given within three months. In Italy there is a lot of red-tape and the process of purchasing a property is very different to the English system though the best advice is to have the assistance of a lawyer and use your ... I like this guide for its detail about Syria, but the information about Lebanon is sketchy in comparison. If you plan to visit both countries I recommend getting a separate Lebanon guide in addition to this one. I also agree with another reviewer who said that this guide is less practical than others, such as the Lonely Planet or Rough Guides. Still, it's very well-written and pleasurable to read while you are viewing the sites.
