. Bruges, 2nd

This book gave an excellent overview of the history of Belgium and Bruges, and a nice overview of the main sites of the city. Furthermore, it's nice for someone only visiting Bruges that it only deals with that city. The small size makes it easy to shove in a pocket while touring. I have a couple of nitpicks. First of all, the statement that "In the summer Belgium is seven hours ahead of US Eastern Standard time" is technically true, but misleading. It's six hours ahead of EDT. Also, "the maps in this book will provide all the detail you need" isn't true; it's very easy to get lost, since the side-streets aren't labeled.

. South Africa: Swaziland and Lesotho

I found this guide to be really useful, and to give me a really good sense of the places I went and the people I met. The practical info is very good, but unlike some of the other guides which focus mainly on practical info, this book also gave good insights about the different peoples living in South Africa (there's amazing diversity there, and the book helps explain who's who), the landscape, the history, and the animals (it has a wildlife guide that is a real help). It was a lot of fun to read and kept me entertained as I was deciding where to go next. The pictures scattered througout the book are also beautiful.

. Italian Riviera, 2nd

My wife and I bought all the guidebooks for the Italian Riviera and Liguria for our trip there March 02. The Cadogan guide was by far the best. The layout was easier to use and find info. The print was large enough to comfortably read while in the car going up and down the mountains. The historical capsules were brief yet informative. The pictures were few but good. After our first day or two, we dispensed with all the other guides and just used the Cadogan. BTW, Liguria (Italian Riviera) is far superior to the French Riviera (which is still a great place). Both have colorful histories and great scenery. The Italians are a bit friendlier, the hills there steeper and more dramatic. Most important is the contrast in small ... Read More:

. Take the Kids: South of France
City Travel Guides > Books > Cadogan

We just got back from a trip to the South of France and this book ended up being on of our main resources. From recommended accommodations (the Hotel Montmorency in Carcassonne has a great location and is tremendously kid-friendly) to warnings on things which seem like they might be good ideas but really aren't (the walk up to Peyreperteuse is pretty steep and windy for kids and there's no railing for a lot of it) "Take the Kids" gave great advice, presented in an engaging (even for reading aloud to the kids) manner. Read it before you go and take it along!
