Full of information about street markets in London, not only the world famous Portobello Road or Camden Town. When I travelled to England in 2000, I was fed up with fasionable / tourist markets, and then I found this book, which took me to some other streets to spend a ideal Saturday morning in. The author knows the excitement when you stroll down the streets filled with colourful fruit and veg, clothes, bottles of shampoo, cushions and what-you-call bric-a-blac. (Shoppers and traders are there as well as pickpockets!) He says he was led to write about street trade to see the multi-cultural / multi-racial energy at Ridley Road market in East London, and this explains a lot. Previous reviewer seems to have missed half their own point. If you are looking for Frommers or Fodors, BUY Frommers or Fodors! The world doesn't need any more of that ilk. That market is well established and those books are good at what they do.

We're the type of travellers who basically use the Net for more time sensitive things -- the changing food and lodging scenes in any given locale. Anymore, that type of info in a book holds a distinct disadvantage versus online sources. Given that we are already armed with that info beforehand, we don't need to pay for a guide book to resummarize it.

Philippe Babour's Brittany is guide with an obsessive attention to detail and content. Of the six hundred or so pages, probably 50% to 60% are filled with history and lore. The book scores high marks as a companion guide to The Miclelin Green Guide or to the 60 or so pages on Brittany and Nantes within the Lonely Planet's guide to France. Barbour logically arranges his sections geographically, connects them together, and contrasts them. Both The Lonely Planet and Barbour have nice sections on housing-hotel areas and specific hotel recommendations, and Barbour does the best. The Lonely Planet is, unfortunately, focused on one-star places and below, but Barbour casts a wide net.

It's authored by two experienced travel writers who actually live in southwest France. ...The authors pack in a lot of information on the region's culture and history into the first part of the book, including a section on Pyrenean romanticism! The book then moves from west to east, starting in the Gascon Landes, the Gers, the French Basque Country, Bearn, and the High Pyrenees, and ending up in the Ariege, Andorra, and the Eastern Pyrenees. Like I said, the book is light-weight, but you could easily photocopy the parts you're interested in or cut out the pages you don't need.
