If you are planning to cruise the Bahamas and Virgins - Van Sant is as important as your GPS. Don't leave home without it. Then, USE IT. Follow his advice - to the letter. The "Gentleman Cruiser" knows of what he speaks. He's been there-done it-and has the t-shirt (or knowledge - if you will).

I have a Captain's license and have taught navagation, safe boating and Rules of the Road - and was associated with a very active USCG Aux. flotilla before adopting the crusing life. Van Sant's description of weather, air and patterns is undoubtedly the best I have ever come across. I have recommended that his narrative be used for the Auxilliary Weather classes. I wrote the first and second editions of this book, and although the third edition has been prepared by Conner Gorry, I feel it's still the best all-round guide to Cuba. It's compact and comprehensive, although the small typeface on the maps is a problem. I suggest that you make enlarged photocopies of the maps you know you'll be using before leaving home. And if you'd like to see some of my Cuba travel photos from earlier editions of Lonely Planet Cuba, they're on www.cuba-pictures.com together with brief introductions to the regions.

I've never gone on an overseas adventure without a guide book, and usually they are good for a few phone numbers and museum hours, but mostly end up being dead weight in your pack. This book on Cuba was like a lifeline during my adventure in Fidel's homeland. Anyone who has been to this pearl of the caribbean know's the social, political and economical ocean that is the Cuba of today is 100,000 leagues deep, and as a foreigner you feel as though you are caught, tumbling, in a wave not knowing which way is up. This book helps to make sense of Cubas past, while helping you to understand the nuances that hint to its uncertain future. A true pleasure to explore, with my Moon's book in hand!

Oh dear, oh dear. This is the Caribbean from a Dummy. There is far more to it than this horribly limited selection of islands.

Aruba is in, but not Bonaire or Curacao. Nor St Maarten to round off the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles, plus its French half St Martin.

Grand Cayman yes - Cayman Brac and Little Cayman? These beauties are a short hop away for the discerning traveler.

Jamaica is in, but not Cuba.

Puerto Rico is there but not the Dominican Republic or the Spanish Virgin Islands. In better times Haiti can be an attractive destination.

BVI and USVI are there. No sign of Anguilla.
