This remains a great book, even after re-reading it years later. It ought not to be dismissed as an account of the author's mid-life crisis, and it remains a truthful, perceptive account of real life in Fidel's Cuba, as well as the sheltered perspective of the tourist (usually Canadian or Euro-trash equivalent).It is also a poignant story of the loss of love and the loss of redemption, wrapped up in a travelogue of considerable insight. Added Bonus: it's about motorcycles, too.

This is one of the very few really good books on Cuba available right now, mostly because it's much much, more than just a travel book. Unlike many so-called experiences of the island, Bran's book doesn't sentimentalise but gives the real experience of someone visiting Cuba with a clear, unbiased eye. There's history here and personal experience and a whole lot of great description of people and places. Bran's range of knowledge is considerable and I particularly liked her Graham Greene-style meetings with the foreign correspondent who got thrown out of the country because he upset Castro by constantly referring to his age! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to know more about Cuba and what's it's really like in the dying days of a communist state.

I am in a place in life that the depth of her experience sang to me. I have the same torn love for Cuba and frustrations with trying to stay in love with its jailed people. I do not read much but I just couldn't put this down. It makes me crave more time on the Island to create those moments that are Cuba! She really captured her moments!
