I'm both attracted and annoyed by Rick Steves' travel guides. I'm giving this book a 3, not because it's generally okay, but because it's an average of 1 and 5.

Steves does some things really well. His maps are really good, for instance. Rather than try to show every street (you'll have an ordinary map for that), he makes it easy to find the places you probably care about (or the ones he thinks you should care about); the museums, train station, etc. are easy to find -- like the map you'd scribble on a cocktail napkin for a friend. Plus, he's reassuring about distances from one place to another (a ten-minute walk to the museum from the train station, etc.).

Of all the travel books I purchased for my first trip to Scotland, the Frommer's edition is the one I used and kept after my trip. It is comprehensive, detailed, and gives good advice. It had all the attractions I wanted to visit and more. They also have a great website as a reference tool.

This was a great book to shove in a purse or backpack: very portable! Great quick reference! One down point, pay close attention to the "$" signs referring to cost for food. I went to the Musee D'Orsay restaurant which they had rated inexpensive and it ended up costing me significantly more then if I had just gone out of the museum and grabbed a sandwich. (Around 20 euros) Also, any other portable pocket guide such as this usually contains an extensive outdoor market guide for the true tourist choice for lunch: picnic! This can save alot of money and you see people all around Paris with fresh baguette and cheese that they have picked up at an outdoor market. Recently picked up this book along with the "Paris City Map" and found it to be an indispensible tool to have along on the trip. It detailed all of the museums, churches etc., and provided the Metro station nearest to the sites. Found it made getting around Paris easy and stress free. Highly recommend.

Recently picked up this book along with the "Paris City Map" and found it to be an indispensible tool to have along on the trip.
