like all travel guides, you can find something that is not there in 'lonely planet croatia'... i will be traveling croatia this summer and have had the advantage of using several guidebooks in my planning... they all have their pros and cons, so a review of any of them must necessarily discuss these:

the pros: the maps and city plans are substantially better than in the competitors' guidebooks... lonely planet is one of the few cheap-o style travel guidebooks that gives you information on at least a few hotels that are not youth hostels, dives or other forms of bottom-barrel accommodation; in other words, they at least give you a few mid-range and expensive options if you wish to go that way... all the essentials are there, with great ... We have just returned from Spring Break in Paris and the "Paris: Eyewitness Travel Guide" was our guidebook for our trip. Of course, the photo illustrations in any DK book are always impressive, and since I always like to see where I am going and what is to see there without having to Google everything, that was an obvious plus with this book. I must admit that II do not really think about this particular book as a guidebook for getting in-depth information about places; when I want that sort of information I get a guidebook at the place (only thing I bought on the trip were guidebooks and postcards). I adored this book, I was actually reading it while travelling in the UK and Spain, and a few weeks earlier, I was in Paris...

A Year in the Merde had me laughing until the sides of my tummy hurt, it had me lusting after the character, after the city of Paris, it had me wishing I lived there, despite all the ridiculous hypocrisy, the childish strikes, the huffy crowds, the expensive cafes that are Paris. Paris is enchanting at any time of the year, I believe. The book is divided into months, and it excludes the summer months because that's when all of France is on vacation!

Anyway, this travel/memoir/fiction book is WORTH buying, reading and lending. It is well written, and lavished with enough hilarious delicious stories to keep you wanting ... Read More:

I consider Out of Africa to be the best-written portrayal of Africa by a foreign writer. She did a great job in her portrayal, indicating that she was well versed not only with the land, but also with the native African peoples she met and knew as well as their way of life. The fact that Karen respected that way of life made her to have a deep understanding of their customs and lives at a time of colonialism where European settlers lived an exclusive life from the natives and only dealt with them as sources of cheap labor. I could not help recalling other titles set in the colonial era such as DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE and NOWHERE IN AFRICA. However, Karen towered above the others in her unique style of recounting her stories.

This book offers engaging information and useful tidbits. It's more upscale than "Let's Go," but at 800 pages, offers more complete listings. It includes sets of attractive colored pictures. The maps are in black and white but very detailed. This guide provides practical information designed to get you around Greece. It includes information on ferry time tables and offers a range of places to stay and dine.

This book will be helpful if you already know where you want to go and what you want to do - but when I looked in the index for hostels and hiking - there was no mention. It's not very good if you are at the beginning of your planning as there is not much of a high-level overview (ie: what to bring, when to go, options on where to stay, etc...). I will probably have to get an additional book for the basics.
