The Streetwise London map is very convenient if you limit yourself to central London and only need to find important attractions and/or streets of major or moderate significance. But many smaller streets in central London are NOT even named on the map and are not listed in the index. This was definitely a problem for me in finding smaller hotels, restaurants, etc. and lesser tourist attractions. In addition, the map includes some decent subway information, but nothing about buses. The reason for these inadequacies appears to be that the map is not detailed enough for there to be room to label the smaller streets and lesser tourist attractions. In summary, I suspect that this map will work better for first-time visitors than for repeat visitors.

I travel a lot and compare guides a lot. I have used and enjoyed other Lonely Planet guides for other countries successfully. This one was a real disappointment. It is thorough, but does not really teach you to prioritize your time, or compare routes. It is intensely geared towards rail and bus travelers, but many things in Germany are worth renting a car to see--in which case the book will not cover those areas at all. Hotels chosen by the book will be in relation to train stations--which aren't always either a good deal or a restful place to stay. Add that to the fact it's heavy, and you'll be shlepping a lot of useless information unless you're spending the whole year there...

I used both Lonely Planet Eastern Europe and Lets Go Eastern Europe on a recent trip to Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus. I found most of my accommodations through the listings in Lonely Planet. Lets Go offered fewer options and missed some of the best places. However, for places to eat, Lets Go was better. Almost all of the eating places included in Lonely Planet were upscale tourist restaurants which seemed to have been listed only to satisfy the requirements of editors. Maybe the Lonely Planet updaters are paid so little they simply do not have the time to seek out the really good spots I found on my own after much searching. You'll make many of these recipes your own, as I have. This is a book written with absolute awe of French patisserie, and yet the recipes are extremely well presented for American kitchens. The type is a little difficult to read, however. The book is one of the excellent examples of coffee tables books that serve also as workaday cookbooks. Paris is tops in world pastry, and this book captures its essence. One caveat: it's awfully hard to read this book without springing for an airline ticket. Be warned!

This book was excellent. There was a lot of information for every place that I went, I had it on me always. The maps are the best I've seen in a travel book, we didn't need to buy any maps and were able to just use the book. I will buy Lonely Planet guidebooks from now on because of this book. Highly recommended.

This book was excellent. There was a lot of information for every place that I went, I had it on me always. The maps are the best I've seen in a travel book, we didn't need to buy any maps and were able to just use the book. I will buy Lonely Planet guidebooks from now on because of this book. Highly recommended.
