The value in "Lonely Planet Amsterdam" is in the thumbnail sketches of cafes and reasonably-priced restaurants. The descriptions of the establishments that I am familiar with were right on the money. They are grouped by neighborhood and have basic information, such as opening hours. I was disappointed that Indonesian restaurants were short-changed, because they "aren't authentically Asian." True, but an Indonesian rijstafel shared between half a dozen or more people is not too expensive and is an authentically Dutch form of entertainment. The biggest problem with the book is that it doesn't open flat. You need both hands to force it open wide enough to read comfortably and then it's hard to flip through the pages. Recently picked up this book along with the "Paris City Map" and found it to be an indispensible tool to have along on the trip. It detailed all of the museums, churches etc., and provided the Metro station nearest to the sites. Found it made getting around Paris easy and stress free. Highly recommend.

Recently picked up this book along with the "Paris City Map" and found it to be an indispensible tool to have along on the trip. I find that Rick Steves' "back door" philosophy and his general tips are sound, so I bought Italy 2006.
The book is promoted as a guidebook to the whole country.
Surprise! It only covers selected tourist centers, and concentrates on the big cities. Most of the towns of southern Italy aren't mentioned. Sicily is not even in the index!

A high quality production.

I've never been to Scotland but this little book paints a beautiful picture that caused me to realize I want to go even more.

The descriptions are not too long or wordy, but give plenty of information about specific areas and events. You'll be introduced to Scotland region by region and seasonally as well.

There's a complete feast for the eyes in the many picutres presented in the book. Pictures of cities, countryside, events, and wildlife are plentiful and enjoyable.

Scotland here we come, in person or through the pages of this compact guide.
