. Footprint Scotland Handbook: The Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Footprint Handbooks
by: Alan Murphy
2002-05
As a Scot, and someone who writes about Scotland, guide books get fairly rough treatment at my hands. They occupy a difficult position - they are books, designed to be read, but they're also tools, designed to be used. They have to be 'a good read', and they also have to be accurate and functional. I look at a lot of guide books - Alan Murphy's is definitely my current favourite. Murphy conveys information very succinctly. He crams it into nearly 700 pages of text. The content is well laid-out, accessible, and, in my experience, accurate. It's impossible to sum up a nation in 700 pages, but then the point of travelling isn't always to know where you're going and what to expect. Murphy provides the perfect travelling companion ... . Footprint South Africa

August 27, 2004
Having just returned from my 2nd trip to Scotland, and this time touring the Highlands, this book was by far the most complete and comprehensive of any guide book I used. It gave phone numbers, things not to miss, and even included info on "things to do on Skye when it rains" (which it did almost daily). I appreciated the maps and the little historical notes they wrote. I would recommend this book to anyone going to The Highlands for their first - or tenth - time. The only other thing you will need is an English - Gaelic dictionary.

footprints south america guide concentrates on the travel aspect of south america with much more detail than lonely planet. it delves into many areas which the lonely planet guide doesnt even mention. having road tested both against each other, this one comes out on top for anyone moving even slightly from the beaten path. much more comprehensive coverage of argentina in particuliar. seems more up to date than lonely planet.

. Footprint South American Handbook 2000
City Travel Guides > Books > Footprint Handbooks
by: Ben Box
1999-11
I have only been in five of the fourteen countries covered in this handbook, but of those I have travel through, I found this all-in-one guide to be succinct, reliable and valuable. That said, it does not replace the comprehensiveness of a specific country guide. Basically, this handbook is a digested compilation of the specific country handbooks that Footprint produces. Thus, if you are only visiting one or two countries, buy those handbooks. If you are going to explore South America and want only one guide, this guide will be valuable. Each country section is condensed, comprehensive and reliable. Though smaller towns will be omitted, the most important cities, towns and sites will be covered. Each country has been segmented into ... Read More:
