I like these day by day books. The Frommer's company has made it possible for people to travel carrying a small book instead of a big book. Recommended books: London, Paris, New York City, Montreal, Chicago, Boston and Washington to name my favorites. Great maps and listed suggested itinary's for each day. Get this book and you won't be disappointed.

I like these day by day books. The Frommer's company has made it possible for people to travel carrying a small book instead of a big book. Recommended books: London, Paris, New York City, Montreal, Chicago, Boston and Washington to name my favorites. Great maps and listed suggested itinary's for each day. Get this book and you won't be disappointed.

Very disappointed with this book. I don't purchase a Frommer guide for reviews and recommendations of $450 a day hotel rooms and $100 meals. Those places are adequately served by Fielding, Fodor and other luxury travel oriented writers. I know London is expensive, but please. This is certainly NOT a budget guide, which has made Frommer famous and very wealthy! There are some excellent features, sightseeing suggestions, day trip information, maps and some off-beat sites reviewed. But a money saver's bible it isn't.

I have chosen to rate 6 guides for Europe. I think there are a variety of guides. In general there are four "layers" of detail in the books on the market. There are the (1) Europe guides (reviewed here), (2) the single country guides, (3) the city guides and then (4) a variety of specialty guides such as Eurail rail guides, hiking, budget Europe, camping, restaurants, wine country, mountains, gay and lesbian guides, etc. At my bookstore there are 3 large racks of books on Europe. I have selected 6 of what seems to be the best selling guides or guides that I thought might be of general interest, and gave them my own personal ranking - just for category (1) - Europe overview. Five are very popular, one less so.

Having traveled several times to NYC as a couple, we were unsure as to what our plans would be with two boys, 2 & 6. This guide was invaluable. It is an excellent resource for families. It is particularly useful when choosing family outings, accommodations, & restaurants. Age guidelines & menu summaries are provided for each restaurant. Descriptions of hotels & rooms (& space in the rooms) are given. Lots of info on kids' activities that isn't readily available to a visitor such as shows & museums for children, playgrounds, & even tips for finding a public restroom. And much more.
