. Eyewitness Travel Guides Scotland
City Travel Guides > Books > Guidebook Series
by: Dorling Kindersley
January 22, 2008
A high quality production. I've never been to Scotland but this little book paints a beautiful picture that caused me to realize I want to go even more. The descriptions are not too long or wordy, but give plenty of information about specific areas and events. You'll be introduced to Scotland region by region and seasonally as well. There's a complete feast for the eyes in the many picutres presented in the book. Pictures of cities, countryside, events, and wildlife are plentiful and enjoyable. Scotland here we come, in person or through the pages of this compact guide.

My copy of this title has the Chinese in large, useful characters right next to the maps. Only if there's no map for a small town is the Chinese listed in the back, with the information for each town handily grouped together in alphabetical order. And like every other guide book, the map for a town is in the middle of the text talking about that town. So what's hard to find? The hotels and places to see are right next to the map in most cases. And since the towns only have one map, what's to guess about which maps things are on? I don't know about the Beijing and Shanghai guides, but of course there will be a lot of repeated information. The sights don't change, after all. The best place to eat is the same. Bus 47 still ... Read More:

. Tunisia

It's light and compact and has some useful maps. We used the hotel suggestions but in most cases the ratings were off, if it says 3 stars assume 1.5-2 stars. Take ear plugs. Almost all of the hotels were in noisy areas. Many of the suggested eating places were also off the mark. Extensive menus would be met with three or four options available. The guides to sights and towns to visit were very good. We used the walking tours and maps to navigate through the country quite comfortably. Assume you'll be ripped off by every taxi driver and you'll be ok. It's still very inexpensive to travel in Tunisia. And this book is very handy to have along for the ride.

. Latin American Spanish Phrasebook
City Travel Guides > Books > Guidebook Series
from: Lonely Planet
2003-10
I originally picked up the 3rd edition some time ago, and found it to be a wonderful reference. The layout was easy to follow, and the dictionary had most of the words that I would use in brief conversations. The grammar section also helped me pick up the lttle differences that seperated Spanish form Portuguese. Because it was so pratical and user friendly I decided to pick up a set of these books for a brief Spanish course I was going to teach. Unfortunately the 4th edition almost entirely left out any talk on grammar. While not much of an issue if the book is used exclusively as a phrasebook, it is extremely limiting in what this book can teach you. Lists of common verbs are absent. List of conjugations are also absent. Unbelievable! ... Read More:
