I've used this guide for several trips to San Francisco and found it highly useful. I've carried this book all over the city. The detailed street maps in the back are excellent and you can easily use them without saying to everyone, "Hey, look at me holding this gigantic map. I must be a stupid tourist. Come mug me." The color thumbnail images are perfect if you're a photographer and want a glimpse of what each location looks like before visiting. There's also enough text to keep you entertained on your plane ride without boring you. This is a great guide to thumb through and pick out which places you want to visit. I have only been in five of the fourteen countries covered in this handbook, but of those I have travel through, I found this all-in-one guide to be succinct, reliable and valuable. That said, it does not replace the comprehensiveness of a specific country guide. Basically, this handbook is a digested compilation of the specific country handbooks that Footprint produces. Thus, if you are only visiting one or two countries, buy those handbooks. If you are going to explore South America and want only one guide, this guide will be valuable.

My wife and I picked this book thinking it would be a good way to see the city. It was not... it was the BEST. We saw so much of San Francisco thanks to this book. We had 8 days to spend there and managed to do 9 of the 11 walks. We went everywhere and saw so much from Haight Ashbury to Golden Gate Park to Nob Hill, the SoMa district... EVERYWHERE. It was great because we could go at our own pace, and not be rushed like a tourist group. We met lots of friendly, helpful people, too.
Whenever we make a return trip this book will come with us again.
Next we are off to Chicago and are armed with that city's version of memorable walks.
Make sure you are in good shape to do these walks, though!

DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are our best travel companion during our tour of Europe. Full of tips, pictures, maps, site info, history, local reference ... every page is not only helpful but beautiful. The layout anf format is very innovative and reader friendly, a ture standing out from any other travel books. It was interesting to see that almost everywhere we went, we saw other people (tourists apparently) holding and checking the same DK book on the street.
The coverage is comprehensive and growing year after year, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice ... every city we went have its own Eyewitness serie.
