DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides are our best travel companion during our tour of Europe. Full of tips, pictures, maps, site info, history, local reference ... every page is not only helpful but beautiful. The layout anf format is very innovative and reader friendly, a ture standing out from any other travel books. It was interesting to see that almost everywhere we went, we saw other people (tourists apparently) holding and checking the same DK book on the street.
The coverage is comprehensive and growing year after year, Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice ... every city we went have its own Eyewitness serie. I just wanted to add to the comment I left on Fodor's Japan. This one provides plenty of information, including accomodations, in Miyazaki City. I wouldn't waste my money on Fodor's Japan. I'm looking forward to my return there in 2009.

I made a mistake and bought the Essential New Zealand AAA guide before I had discovered this series. That was an error, that book is very short and lacking in most of the details.

I think the best two books are this and the Lonely Planet book. I prefer this book because the phots and graphics are just outstanding and the pictures jump off the pages.

The book has good maps, restaurant guide, some accomodations, culture, history and more. Again the best thing is the photos. But the book includes cutaway drawings and history/political time lines.

Just a great book. Use this book with the local telephone directory plus I recommend an up to date trail/road map(s).

This book will be helpful if you already know where you want to go and what you want to do - but when I looked in the index for hostels and hiking - there was no mention. It's not very good if you are at the beginning of your planning as there is not much of a high-level overview (ie: what to bring, when to go, options on where to stay, etc...). I will probably have to get an additional book for the basics.

When you arrive in Barcelona at 11pm and don't have a hotel this is the ONLY travel book that will solve your fears of sleeping on the street. This wonderful edition includes beautiful, detailed colored maps of Madrid, Barcelona and many black and white maps of other cities. The maps for the Madrid and Barcelona subways can be easily torn out for easy conspicuous use around town.

Separate chapters detail every aspect of Spanish life, culture and customs, including histories of the essential Franco and post Franco periods. Separate chapters detail every inch of Spanish territory, from Linea De La Concepcion to Santiago to Bilboa and of course Ibiza.
