Japan is a place one does not visit every day and it is expensive. Also I like to go well armed with maps and books because unlike the USA or Canada some areas have no english signs so the more information the better. I would recommend this book, and at least one book on Japan's society - see Amazon.com plus a good map book.

I first discovered these books (a series Eyewitness Travel) by accident. The photos and desicriptions and cutaway drawings are excellent. Plus they throw in some history and details on the art and many other things of interest including places to eat. A solid effort - lots of stuff to see and absorb. I just wanted to add to the comment I left on Fodor's Japan. This one provides plenty of information, including accomodations, in Miyazaki City. I wouldn't waste my money on Fodor's Japan. I'm looking forward to my return there in 2009.

Lonely Planet's guide strikes a good balance between providing a "plan of attack" to deal with the logistics of accommodation, transport, and food, and providing good historical, architectural, and archaeological site reviews to make the experience more enjoyable. I recently used it, along with the Blue Guide, on a month's visit to Turkey, and aside from the inevitable discrepancies between prices at the time of writing and the currently higher costs, it was very good.
The suggestion in a preceding post that the Blue Guide, and the other mostly-glossy guides recommended, would be better substitutes, shows an appalling ignorance of the Blue Guide, at least. It's a good source for information about historic sites only, with very little in ... Read More:

I am a solo female traveler who has just spent three months in East Africa. Every traveler I met had this guide. I agree that it is the 'bible' of east africa. Travelling to this area you don't have much of a choice of travel guides and this gives good information on all the little villages, how to get around, how to survive a matatu.... all the visa infomation, cultural information.... everything you need to have an awesome trip.

I also recommend getting the Trekking East Africa guide if you plan on doing any trekking. It goes more in depth then just the East Africa guide and if you find yourself on a mountain you will want a detailed map, which the East Africa guide lacks.
