Any novel that begins with Babe Ruth getting drunk and stealing hats is going to grab my attention, but I actually picked up Dennis Lehane's "Any Given Day" without knowing anything about it beyond the name of the author. I am another one of those who came to Dennis Lehane's writing through the film versions of his works. When I learned that "Gone Baby Gone" and "Mystic River" were both adapted from Lehane's books, and that the former was the fourth in a series of, to date, five Kenzie-Gennaro novels (like him, love her), I went out and ordered the series. That was enough to move Lehane into the small but select category of authors whose books I pick up when they come out in hardcover.

I think to me this book was more intense than the first just because a certain crazy man (who hurts people in messed up ways...) has Dexter's sister's boyfriend and for a while the reader doesnt really know exactly what will happen to him. (And also you dont know who will be next and how this crazy guy will be stopped) And once again Dexter himself is a brilliant and likable character and his patience is tested because a certain suspicious sergeant keeps watch over him much too often and Dexter cant do his job (kill the "bad guys"). This is the 2nd book is Harris' southern vampire novels and I think she does a great job at following up the first one Dead Until Dark.
Again we join Sookie Stackhouse as she is drawn even more into the world of the supernatural. This time she is to use her mind reading talents for a vampire in Dallas. All the while continuing to fall deeper in love with her vampire boyfriend, learn more about the under belly of her small town and deal more with Eric, a vampire leader you just know has a thing for her and eventually it will create problems.
After reading the 2nd and not being disapointed I know I will continue on through the series.

Obviously the other reviewer was expecting something totally different than what he got...which rather confuses me because while Dean Koontz is usually shelved in the horror section of book stores, his books are often only partly horror. The fact he picked the book up simply being an animal lover shows that he barely gave this book a chance in my opinion.

While not one of the more supernaturally involved books of Dean's, it is a great and twisty thriller, tying together many seemingly unconnectable people together into a life or death situation, along the way revealing hidden secrets and histories and atrocities (what happens to the main character alone is one of the more shocking things I've ever read in a Koontz book) and finding out ... Although I would like to give the author kudos for building a different world in this book wherein vampires and other creatures roam the earth and certain people have cool powers (ie Sookie's mind-reading is absolutely fab), this failed to enthuse me enough to suck me in to pull an all-nighter. There were too many characters with non-interesting descriptions that sometimes, you just can't get into it. The mystery was enough to make me finish the book though. All in all, not recommended.

I had to put this book down...all the praying in the first couple of chapters so detracted from the story that I felt it never got off the ground, and this emphasis seemed likely to go on throughout. Dull, dull. Too bad, because I usually like Grisham.

Despite the confusion she still goes to help, and in this book we encounter a new character Alcide, a werewolf and another guy who seems to be drawn to Sookie.
Of the the three books I've read in the series so far I would probably say this was my least favorite but it's still a good read. I read The Pillars of the Earth years ago and loved it. So imagine my surprise when World Without End was released. I wanted to buy both together from Amazon.ca but unfortunately, I will not. I refuse, absolutely refuse to buy any novel that has "Oprah's Book Club" on it. It is insipid and ridiculous to have someone else's name who has zero to do with the actual writing, editing, or reviewing of books! She is a talk show host and nothing more. I think it is unfair to foist this person on the paying public and those of us who feel the same should make our feelings known.
Please stop advertising her name on every book she happens to read. I have read many books in my life that did not require her approval. I refuse to pay for a novel with anyone else's name ... Read More:

I have been a fan of this series from the beginning and unlike many series I still find myself eating this up like popcorn! I must admit I am a CSI fan and the whole forensic anthropology science I find fascinating. I also identify with Dr. Brennan, I am not a doctor nor an investigator but some of the domestic issues have hit home with me.

This time out Temperance is trying two ID a couple of bodies at the animus the animus of the local populace which already has tried there suspect in the court of pubic opinion. I don't want to give to much away but the story mixes in voodoo magic, a fundamentalist preacher who is after devil worshipers, dirty politics, and even male prostitution!
