. Fodor's Alaska 2003: The Guide for All Budgets, Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore On and Off the Beaten Path
City Travel Guides > Books > Off the Beaten Path

This book contains a great list of places to stay and eat with prices. Some of my favorite sections of book include the following: Listing of Best Unspoiled Small Towns, which include Kodiak, Petersburg, and Cordova; Listing of Strange Comunity Events which include Cordova's Ice Worm Festival, Fairbanks' Midnight Sun Baseball Game nad Nomes Polar Bear Swim/Bathtub Race. If you are going to Alaska's number one destination, Denali National Park, make sure you pick up a copy of Discovering Denali.

I used this book as my main "get-around" guide during my vacations in Argentina. The book has an excellent section on travel tips which I found very useful, specially the "Smart Travel Tips" section. But some of the maps of Buenos Aires in the book have the locations wrong. I would say most of the maps need revision; I always found a mistake. My advice is to have a back up, maybe a good tourist map which you can find almost anywhere for free on hotels or tourist centers. Also, the phone listed in some of the attractions are wrong. For example, I wanted to arrange a reservation for one of the tango shows listed on the book (by the way, do not miss them for anything in the world!!!), but the phone ... Read More:

This is a useful guidebook for Australia. As is typical of Fodor's, it covers the major cities and a fair number of the less visited areas, cities, and islands. Provided is a representative selection of hotels and restaurants, and a fair number of attractions. It has many more maps than Lonely Planet, a definite plus. Major problems: it is less useful for the traveller seeing Australia by road, since many country towns where motels are found are not covered (travelling from Adelaide to Sydney by a leisurely route, I looked for Port Augusta, Lithgow and Forbes in vain). Good metropolitan maps of the major cities would be appreciated, as well, showing each airport and city center. Still, a very good guidebook which ... Read More:

Although this book seems to provide an adequate overview of the areas it covers, the pricing system does not include budget travelers. I was appalled to see that it listed only expensive hotels for one of my destinations and not one of the less expensive peniones. Fortunately, I found enough information on websites to locate some REAL BUDGET accomodations. I am not referring to camping or staying in someone's home. No. I mean centrally located places to stay with full baths, TV, AC, etc. for a half (or less) of Fodor's cheapest hotel option. Fodor's seems to cater to a wealthier traveler, and that is fine. Just don't tell me it is a "guide for all budgets." I'll never buy one of these books again.
