This book opens my eyes to an entirely new world! Once I read this book, I know I can comfortably start my trip with this book, and with this book ONLY. No other books that I read provide such precise, practical, up-to-date, and down-to-earth information for every DIY travellers. We just came back from our wonderful 2-week vacation from Austria and Germany. The level of our appreciation for this book is indescribable. We kept this book in our bag all the time during our trip, despite trying to keep our backpack to a minimum weight. I'm giving this book a 3, not because it's generally okay, but because it's an average of 1 and 5. Steves does some things really well. His maps are really good, for instance. Rather than try to show every street (you'll have an ordinary map for that), he makes it easy to find the places you probably care about (or the ones he thinks you should care about); the museums, train station, etc. are easy to find -- like the map you'd scribble on a cocktail napkin for a friend. Plus, he's reassuring about distances from one place to another (a ten-minute walk to the museum from the train station, etc.). He also does a good-to-excellent job at, hmm, how shall I put this ... .Rick Steves' Great Britain City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves by: Rick Steves 2005-01 My boyfriend James and I just got back from Britain. We took this guide with us and were very disappointed with it. Mr. Steves claims that the information in his guide is updated yearly. Which information, I wonder? We initially used the guide to choose B&Bs, and the prices listed were consistently lower than the actual prices. One could assume that all the B&Bs coincidentally raised their prices after the 2005 edition went to press. Except that one of our hosts told me, "We haven't heard from Rick Steves or his representative in a few years." I can only assume that this statement in the introduction, "I guarantee you're using the most up-to-date information available in print," is nothing more than a marketing ploy. Supplementing ...
