. Rick Steves' Florence
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves

2002-12
We just got back from a trip to Lucca, Pisa, Florence, and Siena and we used this book to plan most of the trip. Wow, Rick was almost invariably smack-on on everything. Of the hotels we stayed in, all were from his recommendations and only one of them was unsatisfactory. (Two of the others were terrific.) The restaurants he suggested were all great and his guide to the sights helped us enormously. If you're going to Tuscany, you should really invest in this book. You'll be glad that you did.

. Rick Steves' Great Britain 2004
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
December 20, 2003
My boyfriend James and I just got back from Britain. We took this guide with us and were very disappointed with it. Mr. Steves claims that the information in his guide is updated yearly. Which information, I wonder? We initially used the guide to choose B&Bs, and the prices listed were consistently lower than the actual prices. One could assume that all the B&Bs coincidentally raised their prices after the 2005 edition went to press. Except that one of our hosts told me, "We haven't heard from Rick Steves or his representative in a few years." I can only assume that this statement in the introduction, "I guarantee you're using the most up-to-date information available in print," is nothing more than a marketing ploy. Supplementing ... . Rick Steves' Best of Eastern Europe

2003-12
I'm a 'tweener when it comes to travel: Too old for the hostel racket, but not rich enough to hit every 5-star. So when I travel, I generally take two guidebooks -- Fodor's, the old reliable when it comes to hotel and restaurant recs, and Rick Steves, for practical stuff like the best way to getting from airport to hotel and discount passes and such. I like Rick Steves' attitude toward travel, which is to be as local as possible. I also like that he has definite opinions and that he prioritizes his listings. Even when you don't agree (and I don't a lot of the time) it still helps the planning when you have only a limited amount of time. Well, I bought this guide because I was hitting 3 cities in it -- Berlin, Prague, and Budapest -- and was ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Germany & Austria
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves
by: Rick Steves
November 25, 2005
I used this guide for a one week trip to Germany - primarily around Frankfurt. (This review is similar but slightly better than my Prague guide review)
I enjoyed Rick's casual writing style and his philosophy behind traveling. What I expected was an opinionated guide that clearly told me what to see and what to steer clear of. Instead I found it was fairly typical (vs. lonely planet or rough guide) - with some side notes that were helpful (luge ride near Neuschwanstein). However I found that the opinionated advice and diamonds in the rough were few and far between - and did not cover some coverage gaps.
Negative:
Heidelberg - a must on most tours of germany was casually cast aside by steve's as "too touristy and not worth the time" - had this ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' France
City Travel Guides > Books > Rick Steves

I brought this book with me on a recent trip to Paris, the Loire valley and Brittany. Whenever we could, we used the recommendations for places to go and stay and eat from the book and never came away dissapointed. The book does a great job of getting you to the best sights and avoiding the crowds. The only bad thing I can say about it is the coverage is not very good. There are many cities that there is no information on making this not a good resource for answering the question "Gee, I wonder what is in this little out of the way town we are driving thru". If you stick to the big sights however, this is not a problem. You can also use this book to determine what the big sights are.
