I find that Rick Steves' "back door" philosophy and his general tips are sound, so I bought Italy 2006.
The book is promoted as a guidebook to the whole country.
Surprise! It only covers selected tourist centers, and concentrates on the big cities. Most of the towns of southern Italy aren't mentioned. Sicily is not even in the index!

My boyfriend James and I just got back from Britain. We took this guide with us and were very disappointed with it. Mr. Steves claims that the information in his guide is updated yearly. Which information, I wonder? We initially used the guide to choose B&Bs, and the prices listed were consistently lower than the actual prices. One could assume that all the B&Bs coincidentally raised their prices after the 2005 edition went to press. Except that one of our hosts told me, "We haven't heard from Rick Steves or his representative in a few years." I can only assume that this statement in the introduction, "I guarantee you're using the most up-to-date information available in print," is nothing more than a marketing ploy.

Really good book! I took it on my 2 week trip through Denmark, Sweden and Norway this past summer. Although I didn't follow the trip that Steve lays out exactly- this book was nonetheless irrepaceable.
Highlights:
Mountain biking in Flam, Norway
The island of Aero- Denmark
Copenhagen tour, places to eat, etc.
I would definitely recommend this for the traveler who doesn't want to spend a lot of money on the trip, but when they do, they want to make sure it's worth it. This book does a great job with very good write ups about all aspects of a city.

Some thoughts about Mr. Steves' largely excellent book. Highly recommended.

Pros:

* Mr. Steves provides excellent help in prioritizing your time in Spain and Portugal. I find this activity to be the hardest when planning a trip. How many days in Barcelona, how many in Madrid, etc?

* An incredibly valuable feature of the book, in my opinion, is that Mr. Steves provides a one-page listing of the primary sites in each city, ranking each site from zero to three stars based on how important it is to see each site. While I may not agree on his prioritization, the page makes for a quick checklist while you're walking or waiting for public transportation.

As mentioned, this is a small volume and gives a good overview of Ireland for the first time visitor. Check it out, but don't rely on it totally. We didn't use any of his B&B recommendations. Two restaurants he recommended in Ennis were no longer in business. The way he continually pats himself on the back for his superior knowledge of Ireland and the locals becomes very distracting. He fails to convey the extreme difficulty of navigating rural roads in Ireland.

I was just getting ready to buy Rick Steve's Italian phrase book and thought I'd review the French version. I've taken other phrase books with me in France, but this is the one I use and it is appropriately worn. Although I got to intermediate French in college, I did not learn how to reserve a hotel room. I first used this phrase book to make hotel reservations (even with non-English speakers). This book also helped me get gas (don't forget, sans plomb) and find English language movies with French subtitles (V.O. = version originale). I have also found Rick's phonetic French to be straightforward. This is the most practical French phrase book I've seen.

This has got to be the best-designed foreign language phrase book/dictionery ever written. Very well organized; shirt-pocket sized; all words spelled phonetically (in addition to their real spelling); an emphasis on real conversational phrases and practical situations that a traveler would actually encounter. I had to laugh out loud when I got to the section that dealt with romance... and also how to DISCOURAGE romantic advances (such as the translation of "I have many diseases"). If you are going to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, take this along. People may argue about the utility of Mr. Steves' guidebooks, but his phrase book and dictionery is an undeniable winner.
