I'd just like to make a comment and correct some assumptions made by other reviewers. His statement about America bringing "peace, prosperity, and democracy" to Iraq under the "benevolent" guidance of Bush is sarcastic. If you look on his webpage, you will see several political essays by Rick Steves, and find out that he is very much against the war in Iraq, and also very much a liberal. That being said, I did not really notice any overly-liberal comments in the book. That was the only political comment I read, in fact - and I was just as shocked as previous readers until I decided to do some Google searching on Steves's political opinions. He does joke around a bit.

Rick Steves provides excellent advice in his travel books. Unfortunately, the history and economics presented in this book leave much to be desired. Time does not permit a detailed description of this book's errors and misleading information. The best example of its faulty history is in an essay in the back entitled "Whose Story Is History?" Its general thesis is that everything wrong with the world is the fault of colonization by Europe and America. The West is held to a standard of perfection no society can be expected to meet while third world nations have no responsibility for their situation.
