I would like to say this book has a pretty good overview of tourist attractions, accommadations and travellers tips. It is however at times just rude to India and Hinduism in particular. It always mentions Buddhism first such as "Buddhist and Hindu temples" and the like. It also has the nerve to say of Varanasi, "before it was the most sacred place in the world for Hindu, the Buddha preached his first sermon near here". Besides this and incorporating the bogus Aryan Invasion Theory in the history section, I would recommend this book to readers but beware of some of its facts

. Rough Guide Usa 2e
City Travel Guides > Books > Rough Guide

I like this book, as I find it an interesting prospective of looking at the USA as a place to travel from the outside view of Britons. They cover all the states, and do a good job of all the highlights. My main problem is that the author does not hide his political idealogies. A travel book that calls Rush Limbaugh a "blow-hard"? Various cutting remarks on Confederate die-hards? I found that disconcerting.

. Rough Guide Brittany And Normandy 3e

I bought this book in anticipation of visiting Normandy. On first glance, it looked ideal for my purposes (traveling alone with lots of time to meander). Once into the book, I saw that few of the towns have maps--even maps of cities'-centers would be helpful. More than that, though, was the condescending tone he used when discussing holy places (i.e., referring to the devotion to Saint Thèrése of Lisieux as "a cult"). The author's inflated sense of self was reflected in nearly every section of this book, and I soon relegated it to the bottom of my suitcase: I wanted information; not editorializing. For the rest of my trip, I did quite well with small town maps (free at any tourism office).

. India Chronicles

The small size of this book, and a chornological organisation of key events makes it a very handy reference tool to India's history, especially for last 2000 years or so. You could also carry it around and dip into it whenever you have the time. But you also need to be careful. The presentation is out of touch with archaelogical findings and interpretations of the last 50 years or so. For instance, it refers to Aryan invasion theory, which has been abandoned by every historian, because there is no evidence of a massacre at the sites. The extent of the Sindhu-Saraswati civilation (Indus Civilation), 2.5 million square kilometres, mapped by the ASI is not mentioned. It also makes some religious booboos. For instance, talking of the ... Read More:

. Rough Guide Kenya 4e

We found this book to be extremely accurate and informative, both as we prepared for our 2 week trip and while we were in Kenya. The description of the "snake museum" was perfect - we read it out loud to the group as we stood in the park. Much of the information provided to us by our hosts from Nairobi matched what we already had learned from our reading. When we prepare for our next trip anywhere, we'll look first for a Rough Guide!

. London
City Travel Guides > Books > Rough Guide

Rough guides, in general, are the BEST. However, I feel that although this book would be extremely useful for someone moving to London or currently living in London who wants to get to know it in EXTREME depth, it is WAY WAY WAY too long (672 pages) for the casual visitor who may be spending just a few days there. It would take you more time to go through the book (even just skimming) than doing the actual sightseeing itself. You are better off getting the RG to England or Britain, both of which have very extensive information on London but information which can be digested on a short visit. The London guide is simply too long for a book on just ONE city - even if that city is London. .....
