. Ishmael: An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Daniel Quinn
May 01, 1995
Simply put, this is a boring useless book. The plot is blatantly contrived, unimaginative, and absurd. The main characters completely wooden, and the plot absurd. Oh...and the deep insights....ridiculous. Not only does this book woefully mis-represent what we know of human history, it offers absolutely no meaningful possibilities for changing the world, its stated goal.
Alas, it appears that some may enjoy this book, it seems that many do. So, if you want easy answers to complicated questions about the destruction of the planet delivered by a talking ape this might be a great book for you. If you want something that is actually useful in the real world (ie. not the world in the book or some fantasy land) look for something else.

. Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Edwin A. Abbott
September 21, 1992
=====> In order to understand this twenty-two chapter book (first published in the mid-1880s) by Edwin A. Abbot (1838 to 1926), you have to understand what is meant by the word "dimension," a word in the book's subtitle "A Romance of Many Dimensions." A dimension is any measureable distance such as length or width. So something that has one dimension has only one measurable distance, something that has two dimensions has two measurable distances, and so on. You also have to realize that there are geometrical forms that can be drawn in these dimensions. Thus a line is such a form that only has one dimension, a triangle is such a form that has two dimensions that appears flat and non-solid, and a sphere is such a form in three dimensions ... . Making Money
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Terry Pratchett
June 17, 2008
I've been a Pratchett fan for many a moon, and one of the things that I love is that his writing, his characters, and his world continue to deepen and grow richer with age. This latest addition to the Discworld features a relatively new character, Moist von Lipwig, who recently debuted in Going Postal. Although Moist found his second chance in Going Postal, there were still some issues left unresolved, and in this new novel Lord Vetinari has some further challenges in store for him.
Despite the fact that Vetinari runs the most efficient city on the Discworld, there are always those who think that they could do one better - for themselves, if not for anyone else. As Sam Vimes wonderfully observed some books ago, the word "privilege" originally derives ... Read More:

. Spin
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Robert Charles Wilson
February 01, 2006
I'll make this short and sweet. I finished this book about two months ago and I still can't get it out of my head. This is a perfect blending of a wonderful mind expanding and original story, mixed with characters you come to care about almost immediately. A friend borrowed this book from me who is a newcomer to SF and she loved it. And now another friend is reading it and she just keeps saying, "Wow!". But the next time around, when Robert Charles Wilson releases the sequel, AXIS, in September -- I think they'll be convinced enough to go out and buy their own copies of his new novel. I'm so happy to hear SPIN won the 2006 Hugo Award. Buy it!

. The Hero Of Ages: Book Three of Mistborn
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Brandon Sanderson

Wow.
I loved the first two installments of this series, with their strong, believable characters, solid story, and inventive combat. When I put down the second book, "The Well of Ascension", I was pretty sure the series could do no wrong.
Well. I'm not sure what happened here.
All fantasy of this type seems to hinge on some villain with too much time on their hands trying to end the world; there's no difference here. The clever twist from Mistborn, that perhaps our heroes had initially targeted the wrong culprit, is lost here as it falls back on traditional, lackluster villain schemes.
In place of the expected wit and well-scripted interactions, we have a bunch of previously 3D personalities reduced to two dimensions, moping about ... Read More:
