July 24, 2007
Lord Nicholas Satyr is a well known successful and wealthy vineyard owner, but what makes him so fascinating is a well-kept secret that ties him to the ElseWorld. Nicholas and his brothers are satyrs, the last of their kind. None of them are in any hurry to marry but a letter from King Feydon of the ElseWorld dictates that each of the brothers are to marry one of the king's half human/half fairie daughters. Daughters he spawned on mortal women while they slept. It's imperative that these women be found and brought into the protection that the Satyr's can provide. The brothers decide to take turns going in search of the females which each of them will marry. First up is Nick and his destination is Rome - where King Feydon stated that one ... Read More:

By the end of the thirteenth millennium, mankind had populated millions of planets scattered throughout the galaxy. The centre of the imperial government was located on the planet Trantor, in effect a single planetary city some 75,000,000 square miles in extent. Every conceivable square foot of habitable space was occupied with a teeming population well in excess of 40 billion souls. Its internal problems were so vast that it was all but inevitable that its grip on the outer reaches of its dominion should weaken. The empire, like every other empire that had preceded it, was in the throes of decline.

Hari Seldon, a brilliant mathematician and psychologist developed the science of psychohistory - the use of mathematics and symbolic logic ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lyra's Oxford
.Lyra's Oxford
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Philip Pullman

September 25, 2007
"This book contains a story in several other things. The other things might be connected with the story, or they might not; they might be connected to stories that haven't appeared yet. It's not easy to tell."

It has now been a couple of years since Lyra had her adventures in the dark materials. She is now settled in the Oxford of her world. Lying on the roof with her daemon, Pantalaimon (From: Pine marten) Lyra speculates on the meaning of the random movements of birds. Little did Lyra realize that this would soon bring her to a new adventure in the search for a well known alchemist; and a new understanding of witches, and life in general.

This story can easily be a trial balloon for a new book.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
.Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Philip K. Dick

May 28, 1996
Having never read sci-fi, or seen the film, before, this novel was somewhat of a revelation to me. While I had trouble keeping track of the details, I loved the big ideas: interplanetary immigration, religion/cult, empathy boxes, the value of a real living animal...and of course the moral debate of whether bounty hunter Rick Deckard should retire (read: kill) androids simply because of what they are. My favourite character was Luba Luft; she's such a funny bugger. But perhaps the funniest thing was that the novel is set in 1992, but you can blame hindsight for my chuckles. While overall the novel was probably too intelligent for dim me to fully comprehend, I'm definitely interested in seeking out more sci-fi, particularly by this author. If you know of any books ... City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Sandman, The: Preludes & Nocturnes - Book I
.Sandman, The: Preludes & Nocturnes - Book I
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: DC Comics

While interesting, I personally found some parts of this first Sandman volume a little disturbing for my tastes. Some folks into the darker stuff may love this volume.

That said, despite my hesitation to follow up on the rest of the series because of this first read, I did find it compelling enough to make me want to read at least ONE more (because everyone says you can read them out of order). That next one turned out to be Endless Nights, which I enjoyed much more. It's actually rekindled my interest in the rest of the books, as it retained the originality with less of that 'disturbing' factor.

I feel the book is strong enough to recommend to anyone wanting to start at the beginning of the story, but it's not for the faint of heart. If you ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Dark Tower 02 Drawing Of Three
.Dark Tower 02 Drawing Of Three
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Stephen King

March 04, 2008
The Drawing of the Three is the second, and possibly the best, of the Dark Tower novels. On a desolate beach in the middle of nowhere, Roland of Gilead must start to gather his ka-tet, his group of close companions; however, he is hampered by injuries caused by the horrible denizens of that beach. Stephen King juggles the complexities of inter-dimensional travel between Mid-World and 20th century New York with exuberant ease and verve, making this a terrific, edgy rollercoaster ride of a novel, sometimes exhilarating, mostly gruelling, that tests the last gunslinger's resources to their very limits. Highly recommended.

City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Neal Stephenson

October 17, 2002
I have been saying this (woe to hyse) outloud for over a year now and still get a kick out of it (read it-you'll get it). So much so that I am re-reading the novel. Before derailing into incomprehensible semi pretentious litterary babble (see Quicksilver & co.), Stephenson created a gem with Cryptonomicon.
The style is a notch away (above?) from mainstreem thrillers. The digressions are hilarious. The observations keen. The humour witty and tongue in cheek. The history informative. The breeziest 1200 page read ever. Does with words what Bach did with notes.
All in all a terrific effort worth all the praise it has garnered.
Woe to Hyse!

.From Dead to Worse: A Sookie Stackhouse Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Science Fiction and Fantasy
by: Charlaine Harris

2009-04
I have been reading this series from the beginning. Like all series there are good ones and not so good ones. The character of Sookie is always great though. But this book really tops out. I think it is the longest book in the series and the most complex. But it never lags.

We have were wars and vamp wars and, of course, Sookie is not just in the middle of it all but actually has an effect on the outcomes.

And in post Katrina Louisiana we meet a couple of people who have been displaced and also get involved with Sookie.

But the real highlight of this book is an unexpected new family connection for Sookie. I won't give anything away but it adds a fascinating side to the story. And it probably sets up plot material for the next installment.

A real satisfying ... Read More:
