. Trekking in the Patagonian Andes

Like all Lonely Planet guides, Trekking in Patagonia is very much geared to independent trekkers. Considering how huge Patagonia is, the book covers it pretty thoroughly with a wide range of suggestions, from easy short walks right up to a few week-long ones. The text is strong on practical information like local transportation and accommodation and supplies wide coverage to flora and fauna, which is a real bonus. Patagonia's five regions are arranged in chapters that go from north to south which the way most foreigners seem to travel. The information is set out very logically, with tables of routes and a small info box at the start of each walk so you know what to expect. I liked the book's simple but correct contoured maps that are given ... Read More:

. Ascent: The Mountains of the Tour de France
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Richard Yates
2007-05
If you're a Tour de France fan, you'll love this book. Even if you don't like the event so much anymore after the various troubles in recent years. There are many books about the TdF, but this book showed for me so clearly how little did change (in a good sense) in the last hundred years. With much lesser equipment they did stages much tougher than the ones now. And in those years the riders couldn't accept any help from support cars or team mates. I was surprised to learn that from the very early beginning, the Tour de France was as competitive as it is now. And also shows how much was at stake for winning it. It's a great narrative that gives a good picture of the politics and characters behind this great event.
As I'm prepping for doing some ... Read More:

. South Carolina: A Guide to Backcountry Travel & Adventure
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Morrison Giffen
1997-08
As an avid outdoors enthusiast, I have had the privilege of perusing many fine guides to our country's natural treasures. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to read, then reread, this expertly written adventure guide by a newcomer to the field of outdoor writing. Being a native of South Carolina, I find that Mr. Giffen's descriptions of hiking trails on the western side of the state are remarkably accurate and informative even to those who have had firsthand experience enjoying them. He made me privy to many less traveled paths that I had previoulsy been unaware of. Indeed, the true value of this book lies in its fresh perspective and youthful attitude towards outdoor activities, which continue to gain popularity these days. As a family man, I especially appreciated ... Read More:
