. Fresh-Air Fiend: Travel Writings 1985-2000
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Paul Theroux
April 10, 2001
I'm from the Philippines, but have lived the last 20 years in California. I am a voracious reader and can tell you that there is no other living writer-- with the exception, perhaps, of V.S. Naipaul-- who captures my sense of dislocation better than Paul Theroux. I was incredibly moved by this book. His article on Palawan, in the Philippines, shows tenderness. I do not find him "grumpy"-- I find him true. Even when he quotes a Filipino about eating dogs (such a stereotype!) I found the anecdote, the way it was written, completely hilarious. He has a great sense of comic timing. The one thing I would disagree with him on: he dismisses Manuel Elizalde ("discoverer" of the Tasaday tribe) as a man suffering from delusions of grandeur. . The Best of Outside: The First 20 Years
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Outside Magazine Editors
September 01, 1998
Thanks to Outside magazine, which has been systematically cultivating a stable of fine writers for years now, we have a collection of what I'll call the "nouveau adventure" genre. Yes, there are traditional, edge-of-your-seat adventure stories by familiar names like Jon Krakauer, Sebastian Junger and Dave Roberts, but to me the real pleasure of reading this book is derived from pieces like Ian Frazier's "Keeping America's Trees Safe from Small-Curd Bubble Wrap," and Randy Wayne White's "Why Do We Fish?" Their topics are just a bit off the wall, poke gentle fun at the human condition, and still manage to offer some real insight into subjects that most of us would never have thought of. I have also savored the ... Read More:

. The Explorer's Guide to Algonquin Park
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Michael Runtz
February 21, 2008
This provides you with a very good overview of places to visit inside the park. It includes all areas: the Highway 60 corridor, the north and the east sides of the park. The book goes into details of good places to visit for scenic views, or viewing wildlife, or having a picnic. This is a good book to bring with you when you visit the Park. What stopped me from giving this book 5-stars was that most of the information available in the book is also available on the internet. I was hoping to learn of secret trails, or places to visit that the average tourist doesn't know about. There were a couple of places I never knew existed, but not as much as I had hoped for. The book is a good guide to take with you to the park to ... Read More:

. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Jon Krakauer
April 06, 1998
I discovered this book after I read "Into the Wild", and quickly became a huge fan of Jon Krakauer. I am almost done reading "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, another climber from the 1996 Everest tragedy, and much prefer Jon Krakauers book. Jon is very descriptive in "Into Thin Air", making constant sidenotes to explain mountaineering techniques and other information that readers may not understand. He is very thorough and honest when describing the events before, during, and after the Everest event...making the reader truly be able to picture themselves there. The book has photos as well...so we know what some of the climbers and guides look like...as where crucial events happened on the mountain. "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev seems to rush through ... . 100 Classic Hikes in Arizona
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Scott S. Warren
October 09, 2007
I bought this book best on the excellent recommendations found in this site, and I was quite disappointed. Some pointers to consider: - The book is printed on chromo paper, making it too heavy for its size in your backpack. - The maps are tiny schematic things, giving you zero appreciation of the topography you will traverse through. - Has enough photos to fit coffee table display, BUT has no gradings of hikes for quality. If you have limited time in AZ you will not know how to cherry pick based on this book. Picking trails based on one narrow-view photo is not optimal. - For desert country most trails in this book are in-out the same way rather than loops. - Many hikes are concentrated ... Read More:
