. Lonely Planet Kyoto City Guide with Map
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Chris Rowthorn
June 01, 2008
Where do I start? Poor maps, chaotic organization or boring writing? Or perhaps ugly, poor quality photographs (except cover which is really nice - this is the trademark feature of this honest publisher, which is only [inexpensive] as far as publishing costs are concerned, without bothering to reduce the price of the book itself). There are countries where Lonely Planet does a very good job (in West Africa, I would be lost without them), but oh my God how they can mess up things elsewhere! Kyoto is one of them. With so many good guides to Japan available (Eyewitness, Frommer, Fodor, even Rough Guide, for goodness sake), why bother with Lonely Planet? Well, probably because many readers feel that they have a spiritual affiliation ... Read More:

. Population: 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Michael Perry
August 09, 2007
"Summer comes on like a zaftig hippie chick, jazzed on chlorophyll and flinging fistfuls of butterflies at the sun." If you're past a certain age, that opening line should remind you of the books that you read in your impressionable years; the ones that made you a reader for life. Think Richard Brautigan. Think Thomas Pynchon. Think Ken Kesey or Hunter S. Thompson. Michael Perry has a sensibility and a style that assimilate the best that these guys had to offer: Brautigan's sweet, sad quirkiness, Pynchon's God's-eye view of his characters' worlds, Kesey's brawny prose and close observational skills, Thompson's prickly - and very funny - clarity of vision and expression. He goes on to outdo them, however, in a book so small and unassuming ... Read More:

. Jaguars Ripped My Flesh
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Tim Cahill
April 02, 1996
Cahill's writing is somewhat of an acquired taste. This is a compilation of outdoor stories which do not always seem self contained - some missing context, some missing closure. And they are not necessarily adventures in the conventional sense, as stories may focus on nature, archaeology, sociology, etc. While the book cannot be construed as an outdoor reference, there is good information (ex. "wisdom" of cave diving). Some stories hit the vicarious adventurer's sweet spot. The author is at his best in this book when relating his experience caving in Kentucky, engaging the reader with educational content (ex. barometric effect on air flow), spectacular descriptions(ex. lightening igniting bat guano), and hair raising suspense (ex. getting lost in a maze of passages). ... . Executive's Guide to Personal Security
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: David S. Katz, Ilan Caspi
June 23, 2003
I am purchasing an additional 3 copies for my staff. I found this book to be very helpful and certainly provided a lot of practical information. Especially useful was the section on medical emergencies overseas. Our company's health plan does cover medical needs abroad but many of our employees declined in-house coverage because their spouses had covered them with other policies. Many of those folks were not covered when they traveled. Also, we got into the habit of registering with the local embassies when we traveled to problematic regions. This was something we never considered before but was helpful. The embassy staff gave us good recommendations as far as security was concerned and even provided some additional information as to good places to eat, visit and shop. Read More:

. Tampa Bay & Florida's West Coast
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Chelle Koster Walton
2000-06
Before travelling to a place I like to read a travel guidebook to orientate myself. I bought the book based on the rave reviews of other readers on this page. I usually find Amazon reviews helpful. In this case, I was completely mislead. The book is a complete waste of money. You are much better off getting a copy of the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet to Florida (better information, better written, better editing). I like to occassionally buy guidebooks outside the mainstream press, sometimes it works; in this case it was a utter failure. I can only imagine that some of the reviewers on the page are friends or relatives of the author or the publisher.
