City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Southeast Asia on a Shoestring
.Southeast Asia on a Shoestring
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: China Williams, Greg Bloom, Celeste Brash

March 01, 2008
This is indeed the classic SE Asia book and it keeps getting better. But I agree with the previous reviewer that Indonesia is virtually a different continent adding too much extra weight. However there is a 'mainland SE Asia' book which is very light and easy to carry: Trailblazer's Southeast Asia by Mark Elliott. It's a bit strange at first glance but is packed with maps and when you get used to all the icons (and discover just how easy it is to travel in SE Asia anyway) it may prove all you need. Best of all it's very portable. There are helpful reviews on Amazon.co.uk including mine! Worth thinking about if you want something different.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Well-Fed Backpacker
.The Well-Fed Backpacker
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: June Fleming

February 12, 1986
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America Along the Appalachian Trail
.A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America Along the Appalachian Trail
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Bill Bryson

December 26, 2006
Perhaps it was a fit of angst dealing with his own personal version of a mid-life crisis that led Bill Bryson to tackle the challenge of hiking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail! It was certainly a solid understanding of his own personality and clear recognition of his own physical and mental limitations that prompted him to invite his friend, Stephen Katz, an overweight and out of shape recovering alcoholic with an inordinate fondness for snack foods and cream soda to accompany him on this daunting challenge. The demands of the AT ultimately proved too much for Bryson and Katz who sensibly (and with an almost relieved sense of philosophical acceptance) decided to abandon the notion of a complete through hike. But the resulting story, drawn from Bryson's ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Maui Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Paddle, Surf, Drive

We were in Maui for the month of October. The Trailblazer was our best vacation takealong. The Hana Coast would not have been as interesting and we would have never known that the cabins in Haleakala could be reserved for overnights. Being in the crater and seeing all the stars was wonderous.

All their books -- we own the Big Island Trailblazer - are continuously updated and we experienced no hiccups. For us it was TOTAL GETAWAY in another world. You will need this to understand the culture as well as the offbeat little roads that lead to little treasures.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the World's Last Unchallenged River
.Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the World's Last Unchallenged River
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Colin Angus

September 09, 2003
I received this book on Christmas day and, much to the dismay of the rellies, I finished it on the same day. As the miserable weather outside lashed at the windows and my Aunt Jennifer babbled about napkin handling etiquette, I was far removed to another world; a land of gushing rivers, Russian mafia, indigenous people, and non-stop action. "Lost in Mongolia" is a true modern-day adventure and Angus vividly details the trials and tribulations that he and his team encounter as they attempt to become the first to fully navigate the length of the world's fifth longest river. It is obvious that the quest to be "first" comes secondary to the team's desire to simply get out and explore the most remote regions of our planet from a unique perspective. ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Jupiters Travels: Four Years Around the World on a Triumph
.Jupiters Travels: Four Years Around the World on a Triumph

July 25, 2005
I've read a few travel books - Miles From Nowhere (a brilliant book in its own right), 10 years on 2 wheels etc... but there is something my limited vocabulary will simply fail to explain about this book - something intangible. Perhaps it's something that cannot really be put into words - more of a feeling - how finishing the book makes you feel (almost as if you were there with Ted).

Anyway - make your own mind up but don't pass this book over it is truly great.

Good travels - Steve

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Explorer's Guide to Algonquin Park
.The Explorer's Guide to Algonquin Park
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Michael Runtz

This provides you with a very good overview of places to visit inside the park. It includes all areas: the Highway 60 corridor, the north and the east sides of the park.

The book goes into details of good places to visit for scenic views, or viewing wildlife, or having a picnic. This is a good book to bring with you when you visit the Park.

What stopped me from giving this book 5-stars was that most of the information available in the book is also available on the internet. I was hoping to learn of secret trails, or places to visit that the average tourist doesn't know about. There were a couple of places I never knew existed, but not as much as I had hoped for.

The book is a good guide to take with you to the park to remind you of interesting places.
