. Southeast Asia on a Shoestring
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel

This is indeed the classic SE Asia book and it keeps getting better. But I agree with the previous reviewer that Indonesia is virtually a different continent adding too much extra weight. However there is a 'mainland SE Asia' book which is very light and easy to carry: Trailblazer's Southeast Asia by Mark Elliott. It's a bit strange at first glance but is packed with maps and when you get used to all the icons (and discover just how easy it is to travel in SE Asia anyway) it may prove all you need. Best of all it's very portable. There are helpful reviews on Amazon.co.uk including mine! Worth thinking about if you want something different.

. The Well-Fed Backpacker
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: June Fleming
February 12, 1986
I like my backcountry meals to come together easily at home from easily purchased ingredients, to be very lightweight, and to cook quickly in camp so they don't waste time and fuel. At the same time, I can't stand most packaged meals and find that simply adding boiling water to a packaged meal yields only UFOs: Unidentifiable (and inedible) Floating Objects. I'm not interested in wasting time, money, and weight on being "gourmet" in the backcountry. *The Well-Fed Backpacker* by June Fleming strikes the perfect balance for me. For her recipes that I like the best, the shopping is easy, the preparation at home and in camp is easy, the weight is light (especially Cheesy Bacospuds), and the taste is good to great. This is the most practical ... Read More:

. Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the World's Last Unchallenged River
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Colin Angus
September 09, 2003
I received this book on Christmas day and, much to the dismay of the rellies, I finished it on the same day. As the miserable weather outside lashed at the windows and my Aunt Jennifer babbled about napkin handling etiquette, I was far removed to another world; a land of gushing rivers, Russian mafia, indigenous people, and non-stop action. "Lost in Mongolia" is a true modern-day adventure and Angus vividly details the trials and tribulations that he and his team encounter as they attempt to become the first to fully navigate the length of the world's fifth longest river. It is obvious that the quest to be "first" comes secondary to the team's desire to simply get out and explore the most remote regions of our planet from a unique perspective. ... Read More:

. The Explorer's Guide to Algonquin Park
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Michael Runtz

This provides you with a very good overview of places to visit inside the park. It includes all areas: the Highway 60 corridor, the north and the east sides of the park. The book goes into details of good places to visit for scenic views, or viewing wildlife, or having a picnic. This is a good book to bring with you when you visit the Park. What stopped me from giving this book 5-stars was that most of the information available in the book is also available on the internet. I was hoping to learn of secret trails, or places to visit that the average tourist doesn't know about. There were a couple of places I never knew existed, but not as much as I had hoped for. The book is a good guide to take with you to the park to remind you of interesting places.
