Having traveled several times to NYC as a couple, we were unsure as to what our plans would be with two boys, 2 & 6. This guide was invaluable. It is an excellent resource for families. On page 161 of the above mentioned book Mr Haynes describes The Queensport Road hiking trail. Mr Haynes missed an important feature of this trail as if passes through a WW11 RCAF radar site. I have done research on this site and a web site exists with those findings. Perhaps Mr Haynes would like to learn more.

We read the Trailblazer vacation planning guide No Worries Hawaii and decided kauai was the island for us with all it's hiking opportunities. The guide took about a week to arrive which gave us time to arrange our air travel on Alaska Air and rent a centrally located cottage that has an oceanview.

We're in the process of checking off all the great hikes we want to take. Once we get there it won't be foreign to us at all. We now know the highway layout, side roads and all the photos have given us an idea of where the good beaches are situated. Precious cargo, it's going in the carry-on with our camera.

A great book.

I have been canoeing for over a decade in Ontario and backpacking in British Columbia for another ten (when I lived there). I have read many books on the outdoors and I have to say this is the best I have read. Throughout I was impressed with the quality and utility information and the humorous way it was delivered.

There is a lot of information in this book. I was pleasantly surprised how much of my own discoveries were there in the book including the wonderful VCS tarp, the 2 trip portage technique, and even the Knot Knot joke (which is still one of my favourites). A great book.

I would first rate this book 4 * from an objective point of view because I've found that Krakauer's personal mountain-climbing story breaks the flow. It was like interrupting your reading of one book and starting to read a completely different one on a similar subject matter. However the
book is so well written, you can't put it down.

I personally give it 5 stars because I find that it was important to bring out this tragic story to light. This book is not just about a troubled young man who died on his journey mainly by his own fault. It is also about a young person's soul-searching quest, reaching for higher ideals, finding your place in what is becoming an overly unjust world.
