The benefits of having a skilled writer and a passionate chef collaborate is evident in this text. It is detailed, easy to read, clear for even a novice cook and is full of excitement and reverence for the craft.
I have been barbecuing, smoking, curing meat, making sausage and brining pork and poultry for many years and yet this book offered new insights and fresh ideas I had not imagined possible.
Illustrations are used to advantage to explain techniques and easily replace the customary colour plates.
All aspects of the craft are fully detailed, recipes are well thought out and offer suggestions for variations. Ingredients, equipment and methods of work are all covered very well.

This book is for sure a storehouse of wisdom and know-how and a very interesting read, but it doesn't really make an attractive coffee table book and given that it's the size of one, that's a problem. It is very large - a fact I didn't pick up on when I ordered it. Also, take note that it's softcover. There are a lot of typo's throughout and, I believe, some misprints. One of the recipes I made had obviously misprinted the amount of one ingredient and had I not picked up on that, it would have ended up fed to the dog!

I discovered this book after I read "Into the Wild", and quickly became a huge fan of Jon Krakauer. I am almost done reading "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, another climber from the 1996 Everest tragedy, and much prefer Jon Krakauers book. Jon is very descriptive in "Into Thin Air", making constant sidenotes to explain mountaineering techniques and other information that readers may not understand. He is very thorough and honest when describing the events before, during, and after the Everest event...making the reader truly be able to picture themselves there.
