Time Out Tokyo provides good cultural information -- restaurants, musuems, stores, etc. Unfortunately, it does not contain even the basics in terms of maps. Many of the recommended sites are not on any map in the book, and there is no overall map.

The Lonely Planet Tokyo City Guide is far better in terms of maps and other logistical information, such as where trains run and when. On the other hand, Time Out is clearly better when it comes to what to see and do. So, take your pick, or take both!

Compact, informative, and useful, with a good balance between tourist info and the kind of thing you'd want to know if you were moving to Boston. The Times reviewer who called it "hip and culturally savvy" may have been revealing his own squareness -- I wouldn't say there's much truly countercultural about this book -- but it does cover everything from used record stores to gay bars, so it's not entirely stodgy, either. The maps are great and the book is small enough to keep at hand while exploring. A good choice.

First off, I should say that for a visitor to San Francisco, this guide is still your best bet for all around coverage of shopping, bars, and sights. If you are going to get one guide, get this one (just make sure the restaurants still exist before you drop by!).

I really like Time Out guides in general, and have found them indispensable for such places as diverse as Budapest, Las Vegas, and New York. This guide, however, lacks the fun attitude and vast amount of information that these others have. I am clearly biased, being a Bay Area native, but the writers just got on my nerves: the bar section, for example, constantly categorizes places as catering to "pretentious hipsters" or "scenester yuppies", while other places are left for the "cool ...
