Just enough and done up in Lonely Planets refreshing format. I always like the first section with all the necessary traveling details. Hawaii has so much to see and with Lonely Planet Hawaii I got a good idea of where I wanted to go the first, second and third weeks of my vacation. Nicely done LP!

Glad to see this great book getting attention again! I read it years ago during my time in Alaska. I know first hand the splendid wild beauty of the place. I pulled out my copy and reread it the other day and it was like going back to an old friend. Nowadays my time is spent in tropical waters, but this book brings back memories of the Alaskan Bush.

In the 1960's Dick Proenneke chucked his years of the 50 hour work week and headed off into the Alaskan bush. He learned to live off the land, build a cabin with his own hands and simple tools, but more importantly he discovers his true self in the rugged wild country. A quick geography lesson: which country is larger, Canada or the USA?
If the coverage allotted Canada in this 1000+ page volume were your guide, you might be forgiven if you felt that Canada occupied less than 10% of North America - rather than actually being the larger of the two nations.
The section dedicated to highlighting the beauty and splendor of Canada is smaller than the book's indexes! (100 pages on Canada, 104 pages of indexes in the paperback edition)
Any researching appears to be minimal at best, and apparently dredged from a handful of tourism-department websites. Including "Canada" in the title could only be described as misrepresentation - or maybe just a money grab in an attempt to sell more books for those interested ... Read More:

Perhaps it was a fit of angst dealing with his own personal version of a mid-life crisis that led Bill Bryson to tackle the challenge of hiking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail! It was certainly a solid understanding of his own personality and clear recognition of his own physical and mental limitations that prompted him to invite his friend, Stephen Katz, an overweight and out of shape recovering alcoholic with an inordinate fondness for snack foods and cream soda to accompany him on this daunting challenge.
