. Antique Style World Map
City Travel Guides > Books > World
by: American Map Corporation
2000-09
I was looking for an inexpensive wall map to cover a large expanse of wall and to have for reference. I am very glad that I purchased this one. The paper is a very good quality and thicker than I expected. The sea monsters and whales, as well as the sailing ships in the oceans are cute, and do add some to the decorative style (luckily they are not over the top). The overall light parchment color effect is attractive and nicely set off by the color outlining of the countries. For reference it also seems to work pretty well since it does have up-to-date facts and features, though you do have to pay special attention to the scale, since it is remarkably different at various latitudes.

. Costa Rica - Adventure Map
City Travel Guides > Books > World
by: National Geographic
2001-01
Maps are a new concept to the culture of Costa Rica, and road maps of the country simply have not existed for that long. Ticos who travel go as far as they know, and then start to ask people for directions. Without a long history of cartography (revisions and updates), it is hard to get a truly good, accurate, map of Costa Rica. Even this map, which is the best we saw, was not really accurate in terms of its representation of how winding a road is, so be careful choosing a "straight" route over a winding route. But, this map also has topographic information, which was useful to us (the rivers, for example, helped us figure out where we were), and its tear-resistant, waterproof plastic material made sure it survived the ... . Quito (Ecuador, Equateur)
City Travel Guides > Books > World

I've used the Streetwise maps in many cities of the world. They're compact, waterproof, and generally useful. I've tried this one, but the Streetwise format just doesn't seem to work for Florence, which is made up of about five districts and where many of the sights (and there are a great many) are on side streets. A better guide for Florence is the Knopf Citymap for Florence. It has a separate fold-out page for each district and excellent recommendations for shopping and restaurants for each one, yet is still sturdy and compact. I recently purchased Knopf's map for Barcelona and was equally pleased. In the future, I'll check first to see if they have a map for cities I visit, and only buy a Streetwise map as ... Read More:

. Storm: A Motorcycle Adventure of Risk, Exposure, and Revelation Around the Baltic Sea
City Travel Guides > Books > World
by: Allen Noren
2000-04
This book is 1/2 travel journal, 1/4 relationship journal and 1/4 motorcycle journal. Noren's longtime girlfriend requires comfort (physical and otherwise) along with maturity, and riding a motorcycle through whipping rains and wind on dangerous roads, cars passing you at warp speed, provides none. The journey is an eye opener for him and a confirmation of his girlfriend's adult life needs. The passages describing the colorful European characters are great fun to read, while the relationship passages are just the opposite, albeit transposed in a good way. The ending leaves a bit of a tease. Noren's writing voice draws in any gender reader; he's not a macho Hog-riding hardass, nor is he the other extreme, "the sensitive male." There ... Read More:
