. The Goldberg Variations
City Travel Guides > Classical > ( G )
from: CBS
November 15, 2006
Gould was more than one of the great pianists in recorded history, he was a world teacher through sound. Both of the famous recordings of what has to be regarded a his signature performance (1951/81) are worth far more than what you would pay for the disc. Technics aside (and they are dazzling, as always with Gould), the purpose of music is to remind you that you do feel, to engage you in what is being communicated. Melancholy, in the richest sense, and then, at moments, the eptiome of serene dispassion, always profound, this performance is a deep exploration of feeling and truth, and creates a meditative ambience which can evoke in the listener higher realizations. An immortal rendering of great music.

. French Suites (Ltd.Ed)

Listen to Mr. Gould in these French Suites is rejoinig with the life once more. His fresh and free style overpowers me every time I listen them. My favorite Suite is the sixth. But instead my choice you know that he was a very clever artist deeply honest and convinced above all about what he's playing and how that sound must be. His authoritative maestry on Bach let him several raptures accents that you always admire and hardly you find in otres performers.. The status who GG reached above all on Bach playing, has his support in the rhytm ; the rhytm is the form in movement, and that's why Bach sounds so nature and lyric in his hands. You may get in the market romantic, passionate and analytical performances of the suites; ... Read More:

. 1955/1981 A State Of Wonder
City Travel Guides > Classical > ( G )
by: Glenn Gould
September 10, 2002
picking between the two gould recordings of the goldberg variations is a duanting task. finally his label had enough sense to package them together and the remastering is wonderfully done. the earlier recording of course captures goulds youthful enthusiasm and the latter recording is the interpetation of a master. more expressive, more contemplative but just as willful, just as highly personal and just as delightfully eccentric. for those who cant abide goulds 'too personailzed' bach i say, come on lets be honest. do you really want to listen to 'authentic' bach playing while operating heavy machinery? bach is far more intersting in the hands of artists like gould and stokowski. interpetation is an art within itself ... . Vln Cto 1-5
City Travel Guides > Classical > ( G )
from: Universal Music Group

Arthur Grumiaux is, without a doubt, peerless in the Mozart violin field. Indeed, so good was his Mozart that the No.3 concerto virtually became "his", and he used it in his -very successful- US debut. Similar in vibrancy and integrity to his Bach Sonatas and Partitas cycle, one feels that the Mozart presented here is how Mozart would have wanted it (if he had contemporary instruments under his disposal). The tone is uniformly pure, while the vibrato is sweet, but not overly so. Perhaps the key to playing Mozart is negotiating the deceptively difficult solo line with panache, while maintaining the classical sensibilities of this period (no mean feat, believe me). In this regard, Grumiax passes these tests with flying colors, stamping the piece ... Read More:
