After hearing Passion of Angels on public radio, I ordered this cd and have lived with it over the last six months, a mainstay in my travels. New things keep revealing themselves to me in the tonalities which intially I classified simply as contemporary versions of High Romanticism. Some of the repetitions, too, I lumped at first in with post-modern Baroque minimalism. But these classifications, while handy, and while they may explain some of the residual styles informing the pieces on display here, do not do justice to the whole. Mozetich has accomplished something new from the remains of the tradition--and it is a legacy worth preserving. I have liked this cd so much I have given it as a gift. Mozetich has left us a gift indeed.

. James Ehnes Barber Korngold
City Travel Guides > Classical > Forms and Genres
by: Bramwell Tovey, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
October 24, 2006
This disc featuring Manitoba-born violinist James Ehnes (pronounced 'Ennis') confirms for me my suspicion that he is one of the best of the younger generation of violin soloists on the concert circuit. I had heard and greatly admired his earlier recordings of Bach's Unaccompanied Violin Partitas and of Mozart's five Violin Concerti, but this is the first I've heard him play anything from the Romantic violin concerto literature. And although these three concertos -- those by Korngold, Barber, and Walton -- are from the twentieth century they are quintessentially Romantic in thrust.
Korngold's luscious concerto, written in a style I've always thought of as '1940s Hollywood chromatic' (think of Raksin's 'Laura' or Korngold's own film scores) ... Read More:

. Goldberg Vars
City Travel Guides > Classical > Forms and Genres
from: CBS
November 15, 2006
Gould was more than one of the great pianists in recorded history, he was a world teacher through sound. Both of the famous recordings of what has to be regarded a his signature performance (1951/81) are worth far more than what you would pay for the disc. Technics aside (and they are dazzling, as always with Gould), the purpose of music is to remind you that you do feel, to engage you in what is being communicated. Melancholy, in the richest sense, and then, at moments, the eptiome of serene dispassion, always profound, this performance is a deep exploration of feeling and truth, and creates a meditative ambience which can evoke in the listener higher realizations. An immortal rendering of great music.

. Fur Elise Romantic Pno Pieces

I am enjoying this album tremendously. My mother used to practice the piano while I was drifting off to sleep on occasional summer nights. I am looking for something to recreate that peace for my own children (failing to have mastered the instrument myself). Listening to this album just fills me with those same warm fuzzies; I love this music. The choice of pieces is wonderful and the playing lovely. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I!

. Hildegard von Bingen: Canticles of Ecstasy

I understand that this cd is loved by reviewers and will not have the audacity to contradict them by saying that "canticles of Ecstasy" is bad. No, it is not bad at all but I recently noticed that it is one of the cds in my collection (the other one being Dennis Keene's "Beyond Chant") that I play the least, a fact which led me to reflect on the intrinsic quality of this recording and of this kind of music. Canticles of Ecstasy is not sung entirely a cappella. Rarely heard Medieval instruments (a kind of violin and a harp) are supposed to enhance the voices of the female singers. You may like it or you may not like it. You may wonder whether such instruments were really allowed inside monasteries at the time Hildegard ... Read More:
