I have observed Paul's appearances on Britain's Got Talent competition and, like the three judges, I have been left speechless after listening to Paul's renditions of nessum dorma and con te partiro. It is amazing how the simple push of a green button by a lady off stage, in Paul's first BGT appearance, did signal a change in his life forever. As Amanda said, the lump of coal has turned into a diamond. Paul's first CD is excellent and, as a lover of good music, it rates as one of the best among my many CDs. I say "well done Paul and keep up the good work!" I strongly recommend this CD to whoever loves good music.

I understand that this cd is loved by reviewers and will not have the audacity to contradict them by saying that "canticles of Ecstasy" is bad. No, it is not bad at all but I recently noticed that it is one of the cds in my collection (the other one being Dennis Keene's "Beyond Chant") that I play the least, a fact which led me to reflect on the intrinsic quality of this recording and of this kind of music.

Canticles of Ecstasy is not sung entirely a cappella. Rarely heard Medieval instruments (a kind of violin and a harp) are supposed to enhance the voices of the female singers. Libera - Angel Voices review

For me, this is Libera's most disappointing album by a handsome margin...and yet I give it five stars! How so? Allow me to explain. I consider myself to be probably Libera's number one fan (see my reviews of their earlier albums!) and after listening to their latest offering, I find myself in two minds to the point of schizophrenia. On the one hand, this album is exactly what you would expect it to be: perfection in both technical and artistic quality. As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude Malgoire, Raymond Leppard, Pierre Boulez, Sir Charles Groves and the great Eugene Ormandy. This disc features excellent performances of what is arguably the most popular Baroque music ever written. This is a very good collection. The set comes in a box that is a bit longer than a foot long. Each disc has its own cardboard sleeve with different art on each sleeve. The sleeve also says what is on each disc. The sleeves are color coded by organ music, cantatas, etc so it is very easy to find the disc you want. Also under the lid of the box is a list of all the CD's and what they contain. There is also a PC disc that I guess is the manual for all the music although I never used that. The music is very nice quality. I mainly like the Organ Music and the Brandenburg Concertos so I listen to those over and over. The few Cantata's I've listened to are also very good. Exquisite! The choir is resonant and beautifully blended, with a sweet line throughout the MISSA PAPAE MARCELLI. This recording is an ideal introduction to Italian Renaissance polyphony, as it was for me. Beautiful music, a nice combination of pieces, a ravishingly beautiful choir - and at this price, how can you go wrong? Hooray for Naxos!
