After hearing Passion of Angels on public radio, I ordered this cd and have lived with it over the last six months, a mainstay in my travels. New things keep revealing themselves to me in the tonalities which intially I classified simply as contemporary versions of High Romanticism. Some of the repetitions, too, I lumped at first in with post-modern Baroque minimalism. But these classifications, while handy, and while they may explain some of the residual styles informing the pieces on display here, do not do justice to the whole. Mozetich has accomplished something new from the remains of the tradition--and it is a legacy worth preserving. I have liked this cd so much I have given it as a gift. Mozetich has left us a gift indeed.

Gould was more than one of the great pianists in recorded history, he was a world teacher through sound. Both of the famous recordings of what has to be regarded a his signature performance (1951/81) are worth far more than what you would pay for the disc. Technics aside (and they are dazzling, as always with Gould), the purpose of music is to remind you that you do feel, to engage you in what is being communicated. Melancholy, in the richest sense, and then, at moments, the eptiome of serene dispassion, always profound, this performance is a deep exploration of feeling and truth, and creates a meditative ambience which can evoke in the listener higher realizations. An immortal rendering of great music.

In my opinion there is a much neglected aspect of J.S. Bach: his love affair with life in itself. There is always a lot of talk about Bach and God, but Bach was first of all a man who understood to enjoy life in a deeper sense: with a full range of feelings and a full range of thoughts. The latter he produced himself in musical form.

Angela Hewitt understand these things, and that's why you should listen to this record. Her playing and choice of tempi and colours comes from within and are not mannered. She and Bach is talking about something important. They enjoy theire meeting. And you are there with them.

Angela Hewitt is often compared to Glenn Gould, her fellow Canadian pianist, because she also plays Bach. I won't compare them. When I listen to Gould I marvel at his genius. When I listen to Hewitt, I marvel at Bach's genius.

Listen to Mr. Gould in these French Suites is rejoinig with the life once more. His fresh and free style overpowers me every time I listen them.
My favorite Suite is the sixth. But instead my choice you know that he was a very clever artist deeply honest and convinced above all about what he's playing and how that sound must be.
His authoritative maestry on Bach let him several raptures accents that you always admire and hardly you find in otres performers..
The status who GG reached above all on Bach playing, has his support in the rhytm ; the rhytm is the form in movement, and that's why Bach sounds so nature and lyric in his hands.
You may get in the market romantic, passionate and analytical performances of the suites; but Gould will reward ... Read More:

Bach transcriptions seem to be making a bit of a comeback, but a couple of generations ago they were common fare, both in piano recitals and orchestral programs. Bach-Busoni was the most common 'hyphenized Bach' but lots of other people tried their hand at transcribing his music, up to and including the Swingle Singers. Here we have one of our finest Bach players, the elegant Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, in a program of transcriptions and arrangements by a veritable who's-who of former greats--Wilhelm Kempff, William Walton, Harold Bauer, Eugen d'Albert, Myra Hess, John Ireland, Harriet Cohen. Those names conjure up an era preserved for us, thank God, by recordings. Ms Hewitt even contributes three of her own transcriptions from the Orgelbüchlein.

No matter how hard I try I cannot find a single flaw in Fleming's voice. I have put it under the microscope (headphones, countless replays, 100% of concentration) and still I haven't found the slightest flaw from bottom to top of this wonder-instrument. Deep chest register, middle of the creamiest beauty and high notes with coloratura technique that will dazzle you. Is she just a lyrical soprano? well if she is the Kanawa and Cotrubas seem like school students before her. The drama in her voice at some points is so strong it reminds you that of a dramatic soprano. Even the long pauses she deliberately makes before a very difficult coloratura line seem to enhance the dramatic effect creating some kind of agony.

Ben Heppner is a great tenor. Contrary to some reports, he is not a heldentenor. He is an unusually large-voiced lyric. His voice is very fine indeed. This recital contains some nice renditions of French arias. A few arias were not that great. He has the pronunciation down pat. I loved the aria from "La Juive". Heppner is perfect for the role of Eléazar. The aria benefits greatly from having the chorus present and the inclusion of the rousing and tuneful cabaletta. The "Le Cid" arias also benefitted from the chorus being present. Some high notes of his are quite unpleasant. One such high note was the high D in the "Benvenuto Cellini" aria. His voice is really not light and high-placed enough for some of the arias he sings. One example is the "Les Huguenots" aria. ... Read More:
