. Band Of Brothers Music From

One of the truly outstanding scores composed for a television series was the late Michael Kamen's music for the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," a 10-part adaptation of the late Stephen E. Ambrose's non-fiction book about E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Executive produced by Ambrose, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg, this monumental miniseries follows an elite light infantry unit from its training stages at Camp Toccoa, GA to the 11-month campaign in Northwest Europe, starting from the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944 to the surrender of Germany and E Company's capture of Hitler's private "Eagle's Nest" in Bavaria. When I finally saw the first episodes of "Band of Brothers" on ... Read More:

. Young Frankenstein

Back in '74 this record was five star. Nowadays it's merely a four star 'cause you can own the movie...complete...w/editorial comments by Mel himself (Gene sadly lacking). I just recently picked up the Violin (after a couple'a [culpa?] decades of guitar...you learn by playing, and TWINLKE, TWINKLE LITTLE STAR only works for novas') and decided that basic scales and the YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN theme wre a great way to whet my itchy little fingers. I'm old enough to have this album on vinyl, and wary enough to know that it will probabably be available again on disc...but if you can't hold your breath (and I recomend that you don't...screws up concentration while you're trying to play...) and have $45 to use in any way you see fit... I totally reccomend ... Read More:

These three quartets are probably the most popular, and most appealing, quartets written by non-Germanic composers. The slow movements of the Tchaikovsky and Borodin quartets are exceptionally beautiful and so popular that they are often played as separate pieces in a variety of arrangements. The Emerson Quartet does full justice to them in their original settings. They also give a fine performance of Dvorak's "American" Quartet which is his most popular piece of chamber music. To have outstanding performances of all three of these justly-popular quartets available on one mid-priced CD makes this a rare treat, and a bargain as well.

Somewhere out there, perfection exists. I know it because I hear it on this CD. Von Karajan managed to caputure perfection for just enough time to make this recording. The third movement is a rare treat, one of the best you'll hear in any classical recording. Buy it now.

--Thomas Tallis- Thomas Tallis, born in 1505, was one of the outstanding liturgical composers of his day, being the acknowledged master of the composers of England from the time of Queen Mary's reign forward. He was a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth, and worked closely with many other composers, most particularly William Byrd. He was an organist in addition to composer. He died in 1585, having navigated his way through the tumultuous catholic/protestant difficulties of the church which provided his livelihood and creative outlet. --Spem in alium-- This piece, Spem in alium numquam habui (I have no faith in any other [than God]), is Tallis' most famous piece. It is a 40-part ... Read More:

. Slavonic Dances
City Travel Guides > Classical > Classical
from: Universal Music Group
March 03, 1998
Dvorak's Slavonic Dances are some of the most addictive music I've ever known. I jumped for joy when DG reissued Kubelik's 1975 recording of all 16 dances using the best digital remastering techniques. If I put this disk on, I can't pull myself away. Dvorak's dances are as easily enjoyed on first listening as any dance music by those more renowned for dances, like the Strauss family. But in the hands of Dvorak, the dance adds an element of depth and wonder that put them in a category all their own. Kubelik also recorded the 16 dances in 1955 for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic. Decca has restored that recording to the catalog in their "Legends" series (Amazon asin # B00005N570). The sound is not quite as good in the Decca, though for ... Read More:

. Syms 4/5/6 Pathetique

I admit that despite the precariousness of the conditions - the coughing, talking, moving around, distractions, uneven playing - I prefer a live performance. There is something absolutely electric about hearing one of the grand Romantic Symphonies in person. Alas, a CD may be the next best thing. One usually associates Karajan with German composers - Brahms, Beethoven, Schumann, Strauss - but his innate musicality allowed him to excel in almost any category. While the Brahms is titanic and the Strauss is so very personal this is music for the ages - the apotheosis of Tchaikovsky's artistry. Both the composer and the conductor were great fans of that most outstanding of Romantic features - the singable melody. Despite the notorious onslaught of modernism, post-modernism, ... Read More:

No matter how hard I try I cannot find a single flaw in Fleming's voice. I have put it under the microscope (headphones, countless replays, 100% of concentration) and still I haven't found the slightest flaw from bottom to top of this wonder-instrument. Deep chest register, middle of the creamiest beauty and high notes with coloratura technique that will dazzle you. Is she just a lyrical soprano? well if she is the Kanawa and Cotrubas seem like school students before her. The drama in her voice at some points is so strong it reminds you that of a dramatic soprano. Even the long pauses she deliberately makes before a very difficult coloratura line seem to enhance the dramatic effect creating some kind of agony. For me it is a wonder that Fleming still has her voice today. After singing ... Read More:
