. Rubinstein Collection, Vol.61 - Mozart Piano Concertos
City Travel Guides > Classical > Classical
from: RCA Red Seal
January 23, 2001
Oh, boy, is this good! Perahia's recordings of Mozart's concertos have always been my favourite, but not any more. I'm a big fan of the "Living Stereo" era, and this set was a welcome re-issue for me. The sound is lush and warm, far superior, in my opinion, than the hyper-realistic digital stuff coming out these days. I don't have to tell you how good the performances are; if you're already a Rubinstein fan, you'll be hapy with these. My only complaint is the funny sleeve; the CDs are hard to get out without pinching them with your fingers and pulling hard. RCA wouldn't have been so over budget on this collection had they just used jewel boxes. Oh, only one other complaint about the recording itself; sometimes there is a lot ... Read More:

. Mozart: Piano Sonatas (Complete)
City Travel Guides > Classical > Classical
by: Alicia De Larrocha
March 08, 2004
Listen to Alicia de Larrocha performing the exposition of the first movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata in Bb major, K. 333--my favorite of the great composer's sonata; the absolute pinnacle of Classical beauty. You will hear a consummate artist devoted to the detail and refinement of this glorious music. Collected here in 5 CDs are the complete Mozart Sonatas and a few minor works to fill out the discs. I don't believe in the concept of a 'definitive' performance or recording-especially for a body of work as extensive and diverse as this, and so would never claim such a title for this or any performance-but de Larrocha's set is definitely worth having. She takes a refined, subtle approach, never exaggerating or turning Mozart into a Romantic, ... Read More:

. Tristan Und Isolde Comp
City Travel Guides > Classical > Classical
from: EMI
March 30, 2004
Well, if you haven't noticed, EMI currently has three editions of Furtwangler's 'Tristan' in print. After my 'Great Recordings of the Century' set was damaged I decided to look about & buy another one. What immmediately attracted my attention was the price. I know it may sound to good to be true, but this is the same classic recording at budget price. However, you also get budget packaging: no slipcase, no libretto. Minor quibbles since the libretto can be purchased fairly inexpensively. There are a set of notes on a little booklet let inside the case, but these are the same liner notes that accompany the 'Great Recordings of the Century' set. The remastering is the same as the one done in '01. Altogether an excellent bargain. I know that the ... Read More:

. Arthur Fiedler Valentine, An
City Travel Guides > Classical > Classical
from: RCA
January 23, 2001
When you think of classical music, Boston Pops and all-around-good listening...only one name rose above the rest ~ Arthur Fiedler! Not only did he have the best arrangements...but kept up with the times...everything from The Beatles, Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Kern and Raksin...the list could go on...Fiedler brought classical into another dimension, before only the adults were the fans...with his imagination and personality...looked into the hearts of young Americans...and yes, you guessed it...won them over! This CD is living proof...take a group of popular standards...Richard Hayman (arranger) and the rest will fall into place...Fiedler and the Pops give each tune life, exciting and beautiful melodies prevail...never ...
