The infamous reading of the "1812" Overture from Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is quite a treat for the lover of Tchaikovsky's famous piece. This overture is quite a grand and dramatic work, and given the nature of this piece, it was only appropriate to go to extreme lengths to incorporate spectacular effects, which would increase and accentuate the dramatic aspects of this work. In his notebooks, Richter himself tells repeatedly how strongly he disliked this performance of the Brahms Second. Most significantly, he blames Leinsdorf for pushing the tempo all the time. For the rest we have to guess for what his motives could be. After all, it is quite strange that the pianist in what is perhaps the best-loved of all Brahms B flat's doesn't like it himself. What could Richter have had in mind? Perhaps he had even greater ideas for this piece - but as it is here, I cannot possibly imagine. Richter gives probably the pianistically most perfect rendition of the concerto ever made, coupled with a musical insight that most of his colleagues could hardly dream of. I've listened to this particular version, but my review is more on the lyrics and their culturally transcendent attributes.

The music of "Fiddler on the Roof" is loaded with cultural connections, but my point is that most of the songs, and especially, "Matchmaker", "If I Were a Rich Man", and "Sunset, Sunset" are universally applicable and will resonate with any listener who understands their lyrics. "Matchmaker" sings of the longing for love, connection, and stable happiness. "If I Were a Rich Man" speaks of the dream within all of us for a better life, either through monetary wealth or less tangible forms of prosperity.
