There were a lot of closeups of Nureyev. obviously he played a big part in the production of this video. Margot Fonteyn just kinda disappeared into the background. Their dancing was impeccable nonetheless. The corps was lamentable, and the orchestra was utterly disappointing. Nureyev's hoggishness evident in all the focus that was put upon his performance was discouraging as well. But Margot's dancing in this particular performance was worthy of all the praise she has received in her career and after. Her performance is what really saved this dvd from being considered a flop. For Margot, 4 stars.

Never have warmed up to Schoenberg, or any of his 12 tones, and I'm not a musician so I can't appreciate what a work of genius his re-invention of tonality is. But WOW, this recording by Hilary Hahn is making me think anything is possible. I bought this disc for the Sibelius, which I love and is obviously a much better known piece; but it's the Schoenberg that keeps me hitting 'play.' She brings such beauty and warmth, with such incredible purity of tone, full of life, and seems to me to find the perfect balance between romanticism and the 'avant garde.' This is a record for those of you, like me, not accustomed to Schoenberg's tonal palate. It may not displace a favorite like the concertos by Sibelius or Beethoven, but when presented with such ... This performance of Schubert's "Trout" Quintet and the "Death and the Maiden" Quartet by the Amadeus String Quartet is simply first rate. The great Emil Gilels joins the ensemble for the "Trout" recording, and needless to say his playing is outstanding. With that being said I must confess I did not select this disc to be my definitive performance of these compositions. That honor instead goes to the "Trout" recording featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer, and the Emerson String Quartet's version of "Death and the Maiden." While all of these performances are stellar, my reason for opting for these other two titles over this Amadeus CD is the additional compositions you get with the Ma and Emerson CDs ... Read More:

This is an excellent selection of music. I listen to it every chance I get. It is great just to put in your CD player on "repeat" and allow it to soothe and inspire you for a few hours, for an evening, or an for entire day.

One reason I chose it was that I was looking for music that could simply be a nice background noise for when I'm working on things that require reading and concentration. I wanted music that would not be a distraction, and this does a good job. It is also great to listen to when doing almost anything, like even cleaning the house or doing laundry. I will admit though, that listening to the selection from Swan Lake might make you want to dance around the living room.

This is a very good collection. The set comes in a box that is a bit longer than a foot long. Each disc has its own cardboard sleeve with different art on each sleeve. The sleeve also says what is on each disc. The sleeves are color coded by organ music, cantatas, etc so it is very easy to find the disc you want. Also under the lid of the box is a list of all the CD's and what they contain. There is also a PC disc that I guess is the manual for all the music although I never used that. The music is very nice quality. I mainly like the Organ Music and the Brandenburg Concertos so I listen to those over and over. The few Cantata's I've listened to are also very good. I'm not a classical music expert but I certainly enjoy listening to this music. ... Read More:
