Arthur Grumiaux is, without a doubt, peerless in the Mozart violin field. Indeed, so good was his Mozart that the No.3 concerto virtually became "his", and he used it in his -very successful- US debut. Similar in vibrancy and integrity to his Bach Sonatas and Partitas cycle, one feels that the Mozart presented here is how Mozart would have wanted it (if he had contemporary instruments under his disposal). The tone is uniformly pure, while the vibrato is sweet, but not overly so. Perhaps the key to playing Mozart is negotiating the deceptively difficult solo line with panache, while maintaining the classical sensibilities of this period (no mean feat, believe me). In this regard, Grumiax passes these tests with flying colors, ... Read More:

I would like to congratulate first of all the composer, Mr. Bacalov; soprano Martinez, Mr. Domingo and Mr. Chung and his orchestra for a job well done. This mass in a tango style is like nothng else ever written before. Is an uplifting life affirming work, but yet full of the nostalgia of tango. The work is based on the Latin ordinary of the Catholic mass(Even though Mr.Bacalov is of Jewish faith)is written in Spanish. The Gloria is marked as "Tempo di Milonga" is a very nostalgic movement, yet full of joyful parts. The credo is also a joyful section which contains a very pronounced percussion section. The other works can be are arregements of works by ... Read More:

. The #1 Christmas Album

The cover of this 2 disc set features half a dozen of the great voices of our time: Pavarotti, Domingo, Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Leontyne Price. However, selections by these soloists comprise only 2/5 of the set, the rest being choral and orchestral works. Nor are these fabulous voices given equal representation. Pavarotti and my personal favorite, Joan Sutherland, have four songs apiece; Price and Kanawa have three apiece; Renata Tebaldi two and only one for Placido Domingo. However, this is basically a very good collection. The first disc is a bit on the solemn side, while the second is brighter. Pavarotti leads off the entire collection with "Adeste Fideles" and returns later on the first ... Read More:

Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great introduction to some of our greatest composers. Not to mention a good intro to history, too! Imagine my delight that they are now in one boxed set! Now when asked, I suggest this set. What a great way to get it ALL! I truly believe that by surrounding our children with a variety of good music (including POP music) and information they will grow ... Read More:

She looks and sounds so beautiful. The first time I ever heard the inimitable voice of Kiri Te Kanawa was on a recording of Salaambo's aria from CITIZEN KANE for the RCA film classics series on vinyl. It was one of the most haunting and beautiful pieces of music ever composed by Bernard Herrmann. It was Kiri Te Kanawa performance of this piece that was so incredible. I had seen the film several times, but to hear a high fidelity recording of Kiri Te Kanawa on this particular piece really demonstrated not only the raw talent but also a depth of intuitive emotion that she brought to Herrmann's composition. Anyone that could interpret the inner struggle behind Herrmann's music so precisely demonstrated an uncommon ability to become one with the music. Her performance ... Read More:

What a joy and relief it is finally to have a recording of Rochberg's "Transcendental Variations"! I first heard this piece as played in 1992, when the Pennsylvania Ballet used it as the score for a short pas de deux titled "Face to Face." Since then, I have searched and longed for a recording, once even contacting Mr. Rochberg himself. (He is wonderfully friendly and helpful.) What higher praise can I give this exquisite piece of music than to say that its opening Variation has stayed in my head since I first heard it twelve years ago? Listening to this crystalline recording for the first time, I experienced the same rapture - and it must be said, the same overwhelming heartbreak (for it is a mournful piece) - one feels upon seeing a long-lost love. Naxos, you ... Read More:

The audience is reduced to be a bunch of serpents and snakes in a pit and Ravel is the snake charmer. The audience has to be mesmerized and hypnotized by the music, by the flute, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, oboe d'amore, saxophone, strings and many others. The drums and the percussions are there to make the audience undulate, imposing a rhythm behind, over and beyond the melody, the simple musical line played over and over by all the other instruments in succession and together, make the audience undulate to the music, all of them coiled up on their tails, their heads swaying to the right and to the left, forward and backward. Hence the audience is swallowed up in some kind of obsession and obsessive domination that they come to like and desire in total abandon to the drowning flow ... Read More:
